LOVE IT!

I have read almost all the books from Nora Roberts. When one day I found "Nora Roberts Land" by Ava Miles, I was excited to read it as well. I have not missed a book written by Ava Miles since. I was hooked! This was the beginning to a new love. My love for the Hale family, Dare Valley and Dare River and their characters.

This book is about my favorite Dare Valley characters and their wedding day. Their beginning to their new happily ever after. From "Nora Roberts Land": Meredith and Tanner (my first book from Ava Miles and my beginning on this journey); from "French Roast": Jill and Brian (in love since they were in grade school); from "The Grand Opening": Peggy and Mac (she is a tough cookie); and last but not least, from "The Holiday Serenade": Abbie and Rhett (I love Rhett and his mom).

On this book we can see some new characters like Rhett's mom and cousin with all her good fun. At the beginning it was hard to remember back to the first book (Land) but soon it all came back. I loved to see what was next for each of these amazing couples. I highly recommend this book. It is romantic, funny and you can "see" the beautiful wedding, each unique to each couple. Once again, other wonderful book from Ava.

Daring Brides is just what you wanted

I love Ava Miles Dare Valley and Dare River series. They are amazing books about life and second chances in a place that is perfect for giving those chances, Daring Brides shows us those wedding of second chances.
Daring Brides is a great little mini-book with short stories of some of the beloved characters weddings. It gives a good taste of Meredith and Tanner, Jill and Brain, Peggy and Mac, and the Abbie and Rhett- what their weddings were like with enough information to make you happy because it still seemed like you were a part of them.
Most of the time I read a book by an author and I hate when you get to the end and you really wanted to see a glimpse of their wedding or what happens after- here Ava Miles has been wonderful enough to give us a glimpse of these wonderful characters that you fall in love with and show there happiest day.
It’s a wonderful little book, I am not usually so in love with short stories but this is perfect.

Can't get enough of Dare Valley

Daring Brides is by Ava Miles. It is book nine in the Dare Valley series. It is a collection of short stories about the weddings of three of the couples in the Dare Valley series. It is great to be able to read their stories again and to celebrate four very different weddings with them. It doesn’t take long to read this book but it is hard to find a stopping place.
The wedding of Meredith and Tanner comes first. The two are both reporters in the Hale publishing family. Tanner has decided Dare Valley is the place for him to stay. Reporting from war zones is no longer an option for him and he is content with that.
The wedding of Jill and Brian is next. Having known and loved each other for their entire lives, Jill and Brian finally get together again. The death of their friend Jemma had caused the foursome they had grown up with to split. Jemma is gone, Pete has broken their friendship because of his part in Jemma’s death, and Jill and Brian have put their guilt over her death at ease. After debating a long time, Jill had reluctantly sent an invitation to Pete. He actually shows up for their wedding but swiftly disappears.
The wedding of Peggy and Mac follows. A poker hotel magnate and a deputy sheriff marrying is one of the most surprising weddings yet. Some way, Mac managed to get to Peggy and convince her marrying him was the way to go. It helps tremendously that her son Kevin simply adores Mac and wants them to be a family. Seeing Peggy doing “girly” things is so funny and sweet.
The final wedding is that of Abbie and Rhett. Rhett has finally gotten through to Abbie that he isn’t going anywhere and pushes her to finally admit her love for him. Her son easily transfers his male bonding buddy from his Uncle Mac to Rhett who is now his Dad. Rhett’s “Southern” ways make the wedding reception and party a huge success. I loved being introduced to Rhett’s mama. I hope she turns up in later books.
The weddings end the stories of these four couples but that does not mean they won’t appear in other books by Ava Miles. They had become such friends in the other books that attending their weddings was an extra surprise.

My Love Hate Relationship

At first I hated the book "Conducting Business Ethically" by Dr. Martin Lecker --- not because it is a bad book--yet I'll address that later. Basically, I could not keep up and handle all of the philosophical questions that are asked after each chapter. My professor required us to write out all of the answers and hand in the book and our papers now by mid semester. It took me literally four to five hours a week to do all of the work plus write over six papers about philosophers and articles we read. Our grades depended on this as well and bear in mind that this is only a three-credit course. I was under extreme pressure studying for a long test we just took. As a result, I took my anger out on the book and its author. This went on for weeks and weeks.

We finally got to the point were we finished the test, handed in all the assignments; I now stopped to smell the roses. In retrospect I had really gained a great amount of value from this book and learned a lot. When the teacher instructed us to buy the text he should have said this is a YTML -"you'll thank me later" (book).

Basically, the book covered at least twenty-five philosophers in a concise way highlighting the most important details and aspects of their lives and philosophies. After my love hate relationship calmed down, I really began to appreciate the book. I liked that it was objectively written and leaves room for lots of thought and your own opinions. I realized after writing a load of papers about philosophers, there is a lot more to them than the book describes. I learned to gradually understand the teachings of Socrates and Aristotle as well and see things in a different light from before I began the class. I had started to understand the connections they have with the more contemporary philosophers and how these all fits in with Business Ethics. We had just scratched the surface. Now the real practical part will begin--the other half of the book which deals with businesses today.

Thank you Dr. Lecker---I learned to love you and your book.

This is a good book, I had to purchase it for my Business in ethics class, It is a great book and really makes you think, it is well worth the money! The price is also very good and Amazon shipping is known to be very fast. Definitely recommended!

Please pass on the textbook

Lecker incorrectly lays out the concept of prima facie duty. I am not shocked by this matter, though, because Mr. Lecker does not have a single degree in philosophy. This book is a common modern-day example of an individual with business degrees, that also have a nice, shiny Ed.D. in education who puts themselves out as an expert in ethics. His explanation of complex ethical theories reads like an undergraduate-level college student's term paper. This book is an example of why publishers should stick with the experts, rather than the individuals possessing an Ed.D in education.

A Strategic Guide For Those Already Improving Themselves

First off, I'd say I purchased and read this book within 24 hours because it's that good. The introduction is very honest and highlights a cautionary tale that most self-improvement, executive coaching, and whatever books don't address: The downside to improving yourself. That is, growing distant from the everyday man around you because your life just cannot be understood by others. It can be a lonely road at times, and it's striking that the book starts off like this.

Because of this, I feel like this book is best for people already working on themselves, who've already realized that they don't fit the "mold" and looking for inspiration and advice on how to get to the next level. In addition, the book was written in one week, and it does show at times. However, the gems in the book are well worth the price.

Start something

Sebastian tells you why you should do cool stuff and create wealth. If you're not convinced, he gives you more and better reasons all the way through the book. Don't care about money? He tells you why that's fine and doesn't matter.

Once you are persuaded, he tells you how. It includes living strategically, and not tactically or mindlessly. It involves breaking bad habits. Creating good ones. He tells you why you need to throw away that TV remote, and why you need to suffer and feel the strife to break through. He kicks your ass repeatedly. In every story, and post, he will make you wonder why you've been planted on your couch the last few weeks/months/years. You are halfway through the book, you feel like standing up. It's now harder to sit down and read. You need to be doing something, anything. You have energy. Sebastian has given it to you. Good. Use it to write him a thank you note. Not sure what cool stuff you will be doing but are ready to jump in? Sebastian tells you to build some fundamental skills, and try different things, to always be producing - whether its a review, a photograph, a tiny utility program. Always be connecting with people. Serving them. Letting them know they helped you. Help them. So now, you've done some cool stuff. You wish to go further. Is it an empire you want to build? A dynasty? Sebastian will help you forge your path. Wait. What's this? Are you hurting? Murphy's law has kicked in. Nothing's going right. What to do? Abandon not the path! Focus on the fundamentals, says Sebastian. Keep your diet steady. Exercise. Don't make major decisions. Don't be stupid. You shall bounce back. Is the path right for you? If so, buy this book already.

Grab life by the balls

"Who am I? I'm a little crazy, to tell you the truth. You kind of have to be to get anything done in the world."

This is how Sebastian describes himself in Ikigai, and it's basically what drew me toward him and this book. I like people who get things done, who move things, who shift views and change perspectives, and Sebastian Marshall is very much this type of person. Sure, he talks much, but he's got much to say.

Ikigai is a smart compilation of blog posts and articles that captures the essence of Sebastian's drive and vision in a simple, straightforward manner. It's a "stream of consciousness" type of book, more like a personal diary than a blog, and most definitely not a literary piece of work---but who the hell cares, it's the message that matters. If you're unwilling to grasp the useful ideas in this book because it doesn't shove big words and fancy formatting down your throat, it's your loss dude. And shame on you.

There's a lot of information in here about how to optimize your entire existence, from your daily schedule and habits to your effectiveness, your career and your passions, your relationships and your ultimate goals. It's not warm and fuzzy, and you need to have done some previous hard thinking about yourself to even understand how brilliant Sebastian's tips are. But if you're already actively pursuing ways to improve your life and gain more control over the outcome of your hard labor, then this book is definitely for you.

Embarrassment and errors are part of doing meaningful things. It's not such a big deal, really. Keep in mind you're going to die. It puts things into perspective. Mild discomfort? Who cares, you're going to f***ing DIE at some point. DO SOME COOL STUFF BEFORE THAT HAPPENS.

Not our most favorite First Seek and Find... Better still better than any I Spy, level 1

1) First and foremost, I recommend any of the First Look and Finds!!! By far the most instrumental tool we have in teaching our young talker new words. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED no matter which book you choose.
2) All First Seek and Find books are very durable. Thick, sturdy pages. Easy to clean if needed. They hardly wear at all. For these reasons, I think buying the used ones for $4 (a penny plus $3.99 shipping) on amazon is just fine.
3) About us: Our boy is 22 months old and has LOVED these F.L.&F Books since he was 18 months old.
4) But he is NOT a Dora fan, so this didn't start out as one of the best F.L.&F (we own 8 & borrowed 6 more from the library). But it has grown on him over time.
5) If yours is an Dora fan, please ignore this review. I bet he or she would love it!
6) We like these far better than the I SPY level one books (board books or paperback). The board books only have 2 objects to find per page, the paperbacks have 4, maybe 5 objects per page. While this DORA book only has 6 objects per page, other First Seek and Find books have more (6-8 objects per page).
7) While it not his first choice, I don't regret the purchase....still 4 stars

Perfect for a Dora-obsessed toddler

My two year old is obsessed with Dora, so this book is perfect for her.

Each page shows a Dora character in a scene associated with a job (similar to the Jobs, Jobs, Jobs episode) --- a classroom, a soccer field, an archaeological site, a street with a fire truck, outer space, an animal rescue center, a ranch. For each scene, there is a box of items that the child must find within the picture.

Your child will enjoy pointing to the items and can practice naming them as he points. I usually ask my daughter to find additional items to add variety. The last page of the book also includes activities you can do with your child --- like counting --- as you read through the book.

For any toddler who enjoys Dora the Explorer, the book is worth the price.

Tissue culture was first used on a large scale by the orchid industry in the 1950s. Some fortuitous early discoveries opened the door to tissue culture for quality orchids, where previously growers had struggled with unpredictable seed or difficult-to-propagate, virus-infected stock. Later, it became clear that any plant would respond to tissue culture as long as the right formula and the right processes were developed for its culture.

With the widespread acceptance of the technique in the nursery business, it is surprising how many people are still not aware of plant tissue culture. Some people ask, when they hear or read about tissue culture, What is it? How is it done? Who is doing it and why? You may ask, Can I do this myself? or, Should I even try? What are the costs of building a laboratory? What are the potential financial returns? Some want to know who invented it or where it came from. This chapter and the ones that follow are designed to help answer some of these questions.

Although the science of botany has become increasingly complex with the explosion in the field of biotechnology, the procedures of tissue culture are not complicated. A piece of a plant, which can be anything from a piece of stem, root, leaf, or bud to a single cell, is placed in that tiniest of greenhouses, a test tube. In an environment free from microorganisms and in the presence of a balanced diet of chemicals, that bit of plant, called an explant, can produce plantlets that, in turn, will multiply indefinitely, if given proper care. The medium (plural, media) is the substrate for plant growth, and in the context of plant tissue culture it refers to the mixture of certain chemical compounds to form a nutrient-rich gel or liquid for growing cultures, whether cells, organs, or plantlets.

Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies. Conventional gardening is limited by the seasons of the year, but tissue culture knows no season. Gardeners who propagate by tissue culture will delight in year-round micropropagation. If successful, they may find they have even more plants than anticipated. Excess plants can be shared with friends or offered for sale, and many ventures that start out as hobbies may turn into businesses.

The hobbyist or amateur gardener need not feel restricted in tissue culture pursuits for want of a transfer hood and a laboratory or any other fancy equipment, such as is required by commercial operations. Small-scale tissue culture is often carried out without benefit of a laboratory or special equipment. It can be done by almost anyone in almost any house. Material can be transferred on a desk or table in a clean, dust- and draft-free room of a home. Transferring cultures in a homemade chamber, with a glass or plexiglass front and just enough room for gloved hands to enter, is a reasonable method for the hobbyist. Furthermore, commercially available premixed culture media, plus a pressure cooker, forceps or tweezers, a paring knife, a few test tubes or jars, household bleach solution, and a lighted shelf, along with a lot of determination, are enough to bring about exciting discoveries for the amateur tissue culturist.

In contrast to the hobbyist, the commercial grower is compelled to make tissue culture a profitable enterprise. Growers with limited resources who must make a living from a small operation are finding that a large number of plants can be propagated by tissue culture with a minimal amount of space and outlay of capital. Oftentimes growers employ tissue culture techniques for one or two cultivars consistent with their operation, and then build a reputation for these cultured specialties. A few such plants that have made reputations for growers include carnations, ferns, iris, fruit-tree rootstock, orchids, and rhododendrons.Whether the motivation for growing plants by tissue culture is profit, research, or personal satisfaction, the potential is there to produce a significantly greater number of healthier plants in less space, with less labor, and at less cost than by other means of vegetative propagation. The potential of plants is far greater than we know. It is as if the grower were a potter, little knowing what could be molded from the clay.

The Best curently available

This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too. I thought that it could have been organized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and media before they go through the cloning process. Parts of it will be boring unless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there are several step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc.

Inspiring. But I have no idea what to do now.

This was the book that introduced me to permacuture. I had never even heard the term before, but stumbled upon it when I found this book at a local Barnes &Noble. The first third or so of the book introduces permaculture principles and the philosophy behind it. That alone is incredibly inspiring and maybe want to read more deeply. Unfortunately, I finished reading the book with little idea about how to begin. There are some areas that are somewhat helpful (e.g., section that explains an ideal permaculture garden), and it has some practical suggestions some suggestions, but I would really like to see a worksheet, or a how-to guide, or a bunch of case studies.

So, five stars for being inspiring, but 4 stars for practicality.

Fascinating and Eye Opening!

As a newcomer to the principles behind the Reggio Emilia approach, I found this well written and interesting book to be the perfect introduction. The mix of case studies along with practical educator insights provide a real understanding of how Reggio Emilia schools operate. As a parent who is "shopping" for a preschool, this book showed me what early childhood education can be like - which i hope will allow me to make a more informed choice for my child. I'd recommend this book to educators and parents alike. A must read!

An inspirational experience

This book has certainly open my eyes to the importance of bringing children (their teachers amd parents) and nature in contact as a mean to develop their sense of exploration, imagination, creativity and collaboration.
It provided me with a clear understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach principles, and how I could as a parent encourage my child to explore, learn and enjoy through natural materials.

A great introduction to Reggio AND advice on implementation.

This has been the most helpful book as I introduce myself to the Reggio Emilia approach. The author shares her experience as an intern in Reggio in a very readable mix of first person observation, interview, and philosophy. But maybe more important, she then takes us the next step as she returns to the States and colloborates with a center to incorporate the Reggio philosophy. The challenges and suggestions are very realistic and helpful.

Low Point in MacLean's work

It is a bit depressing to read the novels of Alistair MacLean written after 1971, especially for someone like me who got so much pleasure from so many of the stories he wrote before that year. After "Bear Island" (1971) each of his books becomes more turgid and perfunctory than the previous. It is not much fun to follow a great adventure story writer's decline into near self-caricature, and reading "Goodbye, California" (1978) is certainly not fun.
In his early books MacLean heightens the excitement by making the reader care about the fate of the characters. In his best books, he puts us inside the head of the protagonist (most successfully when the protagonist is the narrator), and we experience the roller-coaster ups and downs of emotion, frustration, and physical exhaustion as our hero engages in a battle of wits and endurance against a deadly enemy.
In the post-1971 books, MacLean increasingly leans on a different device to try to heighten our excitement and involvement in the story. He escalates the threat, presumably with the idea that the sheer immensity of the danger will increase our involvement in the fate of the characters. This simply doesn't work. Threat is only really meaningful if directed at specific characters we care about; increasing the destruction and number of potential victims is too impersonal - too academic, in a sense - to get us involved.
In "Goodbye California" the threat is the placement of nuclear devices on the San Andreas Fault in such a way that their detonation will cause an earthquake that will send major portions of the state into the Pacific Ocean. The narrative suffers from most of the faults of MacLean's latter novels - the story is mostly talk, very little action, with key events taking place "off camera" and later reported to our ostensible heroes. The few scenes where the protagonists actually take action - instead of jawing away in boring elaborations of how deadly the threat is - are handled in a perfunctory way, and we never have the feeling that the heroes are not in complete command of the situation. We never experience the excitement of a threat to any of them - we simply read with a lack of interest as they overcome the easily outwitted villains.
As boring as this books is, however, the worst aspect of it is the occasional borderline-fascist sentiment expressed by the author when the protagonist laments such aspects of democratic society as free speech and freedom of information because they can lead to crises like the fictional one at hand. Truly distasteful.
"Goodbye, California" ranks as one of the absolute low points in the career of a great adventure storywriter.

MacLean a prophet? This one may qualify him.

For me, reading MacLean is like a visit with an old friend. I look forward to reading his books, and this was a prime example.

Some of his books are great at being mysteries, leaving you wondering who the bad guys are, and who the good guy really is. This book does not qualify. You quickly learn who the good guys are, and you learn who the bad guys are.

This book deals with the threat of nuclear weapons setting off a massive earthquake. MacLean did plenty of research concerning the geological status of California, and he shares it in a preface.

Another thing I found interesting, though. This book was written in the late '70's, before I heard a lot about Islamic Terrorists. MacLean dealt with that before its time.

This is one book that reading the blurb took away from the story, which I regret.

One reviewer called this a low-point. I'm not sure I agree: I found this superior to later novels like "Partisans" and "Floodgate." I'm at the point, though, that I'd rather read a poor MacLean novel than not read a MacLean novel.

One of his worst...

It's no secret that Maclean's books in the 70's and 80's were far inferior to his classics from the 50's and 60's. Even allowing for that, 'Goodbye California' is a huge dissappointment and one of Maclean's worst ever books. It starts out okay: a terrorist group steals some nuclear weapons, taking several hostages including the wife of cop Sergeant Ryder. Unless their demands are met, they will detonate these bombs on California's fault-lines , causing an earthquake large enough to drop California in the ocean.

It's a solid basis for a thriller, but Maclean loses the thread of the story in the first act. An extraordinary amount of the book is devoted to Ryder invetigating his corrupt superiors, and also the setting up of "a non-existant Russian connection" (as Ryder finally discovers). Red-herrings are a clever plot device if handled well, but in 'Goodbye California', all it means is that the first two-thirds of the book goes almost nowhere. You could almost cut 200 pages out of this book and release it as a novella, because we learn almost nothing of interest in the first two acts. And then, the final insult: once the book eventually gets around to its third act and revealing the true plot, it turns out to be a blatant rip-off of an earlier (and FAR superior) Maclean book. In fact, several plot aspects are taken from that earlier book. Since that earlier book was a cracker and one of his best, 'Goodbye California' looks even more weak and pointless in comparison.

That's not even taking into account all the flaws common to later Maclean books: the 'talky' nature of the book as various experts outdo themselves in talking up the catastrophic consequences of a massive earthquke. The weak stereotypical characterisation. The yawn-inducing 'action' scenes where our indestructable heroes easily outwit and dispose of the baddies. The moralising on the incompetence and corruption of governments and those in authority. It's all here, sadly.

Die-hard Maclean fans will probably want to read this for completeness if nothing else, but for those new to Maclean it's definitely not the place to start. This book really has no redeeming features. It's mediocre at best in every way.

Once regarded as the champion of internationalist culture, in recent years T. S. Eliot has been reclassified as a racist, a misogynist, and a fascist. His life has been the subject of numerous critical studies and even one mainstream film, Tom and Viv, which dissected the intimate details of Eliot's marriage to Vivien Haigh-Wood. With the publication of Inventions of the March Hare, admirers and critics of Eliot will gain new insight into the poet as a young man. The 40 poems contained in this volume were all written between the years 1909 and 1917, a period during which Eliot graduated from Harvard, spent a year in France, studied Buddhism and Sanskrit at Cambridge University, met Ezra pound, and married Vivien.

These poems reveal a great deal about T. S. Eliot, the man and the poet. His borrowings from other poets are often apparent (an older Eliot once declared: "immature poets imitate; mature poets steal"), as are the repressed scatological, sexual, and neurotic impulses that would have been offensive or shocking to readers of his time. The annotations by editor Christopher Ricks add to our understanding of the poems themselves and what they expose about their author's complicated psyche.

Though available in manuscript to scholars since 1968, this is the first appearance?for all but five poems?of Eliot's "lost" notebook of drafts and fragments. Eliot never intended this unfinished work to see publication, but in page after page his autumnal sensibility, his signature aura of languid urban malaise?however tentative?surfaces unmistakably: "We hibernate among the bricks/ And live across the window panes/ With marmalade and tea at six/ Indifferent to what the wind does." With more than 300 pages of crepuscular notes to accompany barely 100 pages of poetry, this edition is very much an academic enterprise, but it reveals fascinating dimensions of a young poetic imagination poised at the threshold of maturity. Among stuttering overtures for "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and politically incorrect, ribald lyrics lurk intriguing attempts like "Suite Clownesque," which hints at a postmodernism ("In trying to construe this text: 'Where shall we go to next?'") decades away. The Quintessential Collection of Lonely Verse

Eliot is known to undergrads and postgrads as the genius poet of "Four Quartets" and "The Wasteland;" a man who wrote some of the greatest and most confusing verse of the twentieth century. While the rewards of exploration into such poems are certainly great, it is perhaps a more human need for emotional comfort. The above, professional reviews focus on the small section of bawdry verse in the work, but the majority of this collection is devoted to the great, early emotional works of Eliot. The only familiar poem to most readers will probably be "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (with a previously unpublished extension) and a more perfect banner work could not have been chosen. The poems are beautiful, concise, imagistic, painful, somber, but most of all lonely. Here in his early years Eliot is not living in an academic world, simply the world--with love, hypocrisy, doubt, joy, and emptiness. To read the greatest poet of our centu! ry describe that which is greatly profound is a privilege, here to read him describe what is simply profound is a gift. I recommend this book over all other collections of Eliot's or anyone else's verse. If you were not one of the 11th graders who discarded Prufrock as a helpless reject, and instead saw him as a deeply lonely individual much like ourselves, this volume is for you. It will touch your life and make you just that much more complete.

It's not Eliot's best work of course, but that's not why I bought it. I ordered this collection to better understand Eliot before he became Eliot. I found a few books of his very early poetry in my local university's library, but nothing for the years between childhood and Prufrock. I think I've gained a little more insight into one of my favorite modern poets.

I absolutely love this book. I've always been a fan of T. S. Eliot, so I was very happy with "Inventions of the March Hare". It contains all of the famed Prufrock poems, as well as other well-known and previously unpublished poetry. There are also explanatory notes after the poems, and it even includes letters written by Eliot. I highly recommend "Inventions" for any Eliot, or poetry, fan.
