Disasters in Field Research: Preparing for and coping with unexpected events is an excellent field research guide book not only for beginners, but also a check-list for experts. I found the book interesting and enriching as it extensively discusses actual challenges of conducting field research apart from theoretical courses that are mostly set in an ideal setting. The book focuses on collecting data in low or middle income countries and provides comprehensive guidance on all possible scenarios whom the authors have experienced themselves in their extensive field researches across different countries. At times amusing and other times sad, the book also benefits from extensive firsthand accounts of researchers in the fields and their means of coping or lack of thereof.
It is a book I recommend not only for people who are planning for extended field researches out of their countries, but even for those who collect data in their local communities and familiar settings.

I suggest when Charlyn ends the free promotion period she seriously re-thinks the $2.99 price on this book. It deserves more respect than that.

I was impressed by the cleverness of her Appreneur Summit and watched quite a few of the videos when it was being held.

My background includes decades of software development, including shipping products used by tens of thousands of users.

I've also spent a couple of years of studying the startup scene, working on my own startup and going through the Founder Institute in 2014.

I still picked up some valuable points from the summit videos and I'm really happy to see those videos summarised in book form because it's a lot more usable and better written than my own notes. Even better, treat the book as a guide to the videos so you can optimise your viewing time - go buy them after you read the book!

Un premier roman à couper le souffle!

Ce premier roman de Redelsperger laisse entrevoir une brillante carrière d'auteur de polar. Il s'agit à ce qu'il parait du premier tome d'une trilogie qui s'annonce passionnante. Intrigue bien fignolée, retours d'ascenseur à couper le souffle, je qualifierais ce premier roman de "page turner". Les personnages et l'intrigue sont bien campés, contemporains et astucieux. Tout y est pour faire de ce premier roman une réussite. Théorie du complot, ramifications internationales, allusions à des techniques à la fine pointe de la technologie et évidemment des vilains sans âme et prêts à tout pour mener à bien leur boulot. Du début à la fin, j'ai été pris par les multiples arcanes de cette intrigue. En un mot comme en mille, j'ai adoré ce polar duquel je me ferai un plaisir de recommander la lecture. Vivement le tome 2. Bravo!

It seems that because of dark matter, dark energy and dark (weak) gravity, our universe has the right attributes for the development of complex structure and the evolution of intelligent life that can engage in the quest to understand our world. These “dark” or more hidden attributes of the cosmos have very good outcomes. In particular, the existence of dark matter makes it easier to form complex structures, including galaxies, stars and planets through gravitational collapse of denser regions of the universe. Planets are the most suitable abodes for the development of life. Dark energy acts to extend the lifetime of the universe by counteracting gravity and driving continued expansion of the universe. Even as far back as the 1930s there has been evidence that most of the matter in the universe was not visible via electromagnetic radiation (optical light, radio waves, etc.). By the last few decades of the 20th century, the case for a considerable amount of this dark matter was very strong. It is the second largest contributor to the total mass-energy of the universe. We don’t know what it is and there are various candidates to explain it; nevertheless we see the gravitational effects of dark matter everywhere on the largest scales. Recent observational results indicate that dark matter dominates by a factor of 6 relative to the ordinary matter that makes up stars, planets, and living things. We now know that the major contributor to the mass-energy of the universe is not the substantial dark matter, but the ‘newer’ so-called dark energy. Dark energy acts to some extent as a negative gravity, and for the last several billion years has driven the expansion of the universe to a faster and faster pace, overcoming even the gravitational effect of dark matter. We have a general idea that it is the irreducible energy found in every volume of space, even in the absence of matter – in the vacuum. We don’t understand why it takes the value that it does, one that is small in quantum particle physics terms, but nevertheless is of great significance on the large cosmological scale of the universe. The third important aspect to consider is not a mass-energy component, but the nature of gravity and space-time. The big question here is – why is gravity so relatively weak, as compared to the other 3 forces of nature? These 3 forces are the electromagnetic force, the strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force. Gravity is different – it has a dark or hidden side. It may very well operate in extra dimensions beyond the normal 4 dimensions of space-time that we can observe. This is what we mean in this book by “dark gravity”.

About the Author
Stephen Perrenod holds Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Astronomy from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s in Physics from M.I.T. His primary research focus was on the cosmological evolution of X-ray emitting clusters of galaxies. After several years as a postdoctoral researcher in astrophysics he moved into the High Performance Computing field, where he has worked for over a quarter century. He has been a frequent public speaker on HPC, Grid and Cloud computing topics. When he was active in astrophysics in the 1970s, the cosmological constant – which now is of such great significance – was usually dismissed as unlikely to have a non-zero value.

Well written by a physicist currently involved in this type of reseach!

This was one of the better books I have read on the subject that is really more for the devoted science geek and, since I am one of those type of people, it held my interest from beginning to end. Much of the subject matter, however, is as yet unproven experimentally, but the ideas are based on more than just fancy.

I would highly recommend this book to people who have a background in science and a strong desire to learn about the interesting theories and thoughts on this new branch of research.

Its a great overall coverage of the history of cosmology.

Really good explanations of the issues and different avenues of investigation. Doesn't include the later Higgs boson and gravitational wave discoveries but nonetheless talks about the search for the former and mentions the tiny variations in CMB. Also talks about the possible outcomes for where the universe is heading.

The author pulls together the latest thoughts about Dark stuff and makes it all sound like there are some answers. Time and more experimental data will fill in a few blanks and expose many more. I only can hope that we don't destroy ourselves out of ignorance before we find the real Grand Unifying Theory.

Best books for Boys who love animals and fighting

My five year old (now six) first discovered this series at a pre-school book fair. He has been hooked every since and we now own all of this series...If you have boys who love fighting and animals you cannot go wrong. The facts in here are great for kids to learn and it also has helped with my son's memorization.

My 7 year old son is fascinated by the Who Would Win series! Over the past few years, we have collected all the titles. This was a great addition! As usual, my son loves it and can't wait for the next one to come out! Jerry Pallotta is the best!

Awesome series!

My 7 year old son LOVED these additions to his prior "Who Would Win" books--he learns so much & enjoys reading these on his own. I love how two species are compared, side by side--makes the Facts easy to remember & puts the information into perspective. (example--how BIG something is compared to a 7 year old boy!) We re-read all of the books, and compare the physical characteristics from other species, too. Awesome, cool series!

Americans produce the most waste of any people on Earth, says Rogers, but few of us ever think about where all that trash goes. Rogers endeavors to show the inner workings of the waste stream, from the garbage truck to the landfill, incinerator or parts unknown. She points out that recycling, once touted as an environmental lifesaver, "has serious flaws," and has done little to mitigate garbage's long history of environmental damage. Rogers also includes chapters on the history of waste removal and disposal, highlighting early sanitation efforts in New York City, as well as the multi-billion-dollar, multinational business of garbage. Consistently engaging, the book delineates the myriad problems caused by the country's waste output, but offers very few concrete examples of what readers can do to improve the garbage situation; instead, Rogers stoically acknowledges that "while consumers making choices with the environment in mind is a good thing, it is in no way a real solution to our trash woes." Nevertheless, the book is an intriguing look into an often misunderstood and overlooked industry.

Rogers details everything that is wrong with today's wasteful packaging, bogus recycling, and flawed landfills and incinerators. Environmentalists, read this book!

When I purchased this book, I thought it might add to my store of trivia knowlege, sort of a fun little look at something most of us never think about. I expected to describe it with words like "nifty." This book was not what I expected, and I'm glad.

This book was an engrossing discussion of how the nature and quantity of consumer garbage (as opposed to industrial waste) has changed. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution and moving up through today, this book considers the ways in which government policy and the corporate profit motive create a socity in which garbage - lots and lots of garbage - is inevitable, and why even the best-intentioned efforts at recycling barely make a dent in the mountain of trash.

I have a professional background in economics, and so I got a great deal out of some of Rogers' arguements that were based in economic theory. However, her simple, straightforward style makes it easy for anyone to follow her reasoning.

The subtitle, The Hidden Life of Garbage, was misleading. Perhaps a better subtitle might have been The History and Social Implications of Garbage. Although that sounds a bit scholarly, this book, while extremely well researched, did not read at all like a textbook. Rather it was an approachable discussion of why garbage occurs and why the current solutions are not working.

A must-read for anyone who cares about planet Earth, whether they are chaining themselves to trees or just recycling their soda can!

Encompassing and honest

This book is honest and what I mean by that is that it looks at the impacts of waste and concepts to remove it. Some might suggest that recycling works but that is not always the case because if the industry does not purchase recycled products then it just creates a sub industry. There are not that many books that will admit that a given product can only be recycled a given number of times (plastics are referenced in it).

The book could use a bit more updating because it does not mention other aspects but that might simply be due to size constraints. For example when it references ewaste it does not fully explain that some major retailers offer recycling. Infact with given commodity prices some might actually pay people to take it away. The book does drop the ball a bit on RoHS. The RoHS concept of course attempts to eliminate lead from electronics but this is controversial as the replacements for it do not always conduct power the same way. This has resulted in the so called "red ring of death" with Microsoft Xbox 2 as well as created higher prices which some might argue are a form of class warfare.

It does note that solutions for problems create their own problems. Horses as a means of transit meant animal wastes all over the place. Cars replaced that with their own wastes. Likewise we should be careful that we do not have future issues. Incandescant light bulbs are horrid in terms of power consumption as most of the output is not in light but as heat. LED's produce much less heat and last longer but if it is used as a traffic light during the winter it can be rendered useless.

This book is not 'garbage' :)

This book is easy to read, flows very well and clearly outlines its' content and case-by-case accounts. . Excellent resource for any student studying the impact garbage has on our environment - it was required reading for an Environmental Science college class and it would definitely meet the needs of most similar class curriculum's (i.e. Sustainability etc). It's also a personal eye-opener for anyone wondering where our trash goes and how corporations should take responsibility regarding their 'trash'. As human populations explode, one day there will be be more billions of tons of trash with no place to put it and the very real problem of disposing of such (especially non-biodegradable items) will be an epidemic concern. You owe it to yourself to read this book.
