Gary Crew was born in 1947 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and he began writing fiction--mostly teenage, young adult fiction--in 1985. He has twice been awarded the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award (for Strange Objects, 1991, and Angel's Gate,1993). Gary has also been twice shortlisted for the Edgar Allan Poe Mystery Fiction Award for Youth in the U.S. and awarded the American Children's Book of Distinction Award. He also won the Ned Kelly Prize for Crime Fiction. He has twice won the CBC Book of the Year in the picture book category. He is the series editor of Lothian's After Dark series of macabre tales. His books are published internationally.

Award-winning artist and author Shaun Tan has achieved international recognition for his work, including the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award for this book, an Honor Book Award for Memorial (with G. Crew) and The Lost Thing, an APA Design Award, an Honorable Mention at the Bologna Book Fair, three Aurealis Awards, and Spectrum Gold and Silver Awards. In 2001 he was named best artist at the World Fantasy Awards in Montreal. A Dark Book

This book is very original but very dark. The artwork and story a very well done. A lot of effort went in to the detailing of the pictures, and you could look at each page for hours! The story would be scary to anyone, especially children. The style is writing is detached and creepy. I don't even know how to describe the book, other than it leaves you with a feeling of dread. In the story, the kid Tristan is compelled to look further in to the Viewer, even though the images continue to get worse. A good lesson in the dark nature of humanity, I would suggest reading it during the day.

Disapointing compared to Shaun Tan's works

I am a great fan of Shaun Tan, and that's the main reason I bought this book, even though it did not look very promising.

In the beginning the book slightly reminds The Lost Thing, which is a masterpiece, one of the most beautifully illustrated and deep books. However, as the story develops, it becomes darker and, what is worse, meaningless. I could not find any lesson in the book.

Of course the drawings are good, Shaun Tan is always great. However, compared to his creations it is way less than expected.

I would highly recommend the books written AND illustrated by Shaun Tan, they have no flaws. Look for The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, and The Arrival, they are extremely beautiful and deep books.

Gary Crew, The Viewer (Simply Read Books, 2003)

Any book illustrated by Shaun Tan is probably going to be a winner, and Gary Crew's The Viewer is no exception. A boy finds a box, takes it home, and finds a Viewmaster inside with a set of discs that are unlike anything he's ever seen before. Very short, and Tan's illustrations are the star attraction here, but still well worth your time, no matter your age. ****

About the Author

Hannelore Liero is an apl. Prof. for Mathematical Statistics at the University of Potsdam. She studied Mathematics at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. She earned her Ph.D. while working as a scientist at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Since 1992, she has taught Statistics for undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics, Biology and Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Potsdam. In addition to teaching, she does basic research in Statistics and supports scientists applying statistical methods in practice.

Silvelyn Zwanzig is an Associate Professor for Mathematical Statistics at Uppsala University. She studied Mathematics at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. Before coming to Sweden she was Assistant Professor at the University of Hamburg in Germany. She received her Ph.D. in Mathematics at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Since 1991, she has taught Statistics for undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests have moved from theoretical statistics to computer intensive statistics. She is interested in consulting and was working in Astrometry.

Excellent introduction to statistical inference theory

I had this book as a student, so I have really _studied_ it. This book serves as a really great introduction to statistical inference theory. It is mathematically precise, yet accessible for students who are exposed to the topic for the first time. It contains a large number of carefully worked through examples, which makes the book suitable for self-studies. Self-studies are also made easier by the fact that all exercises have worked through solutions. Concepts that many students find difficult when seeing it for the first time (e.g. Neyman-Pearson test theory) are explained mathematically and with a number of illustrations, making it easier to really grasp the fundamental underpinnings of them. All in all I highly recommend this book - both for teaching the topic and for self-studies.
