This is actually volume 2

I'm writing this mostly because I accidentally bought Volume 2 (Fight Day) before buying Volume 1 (The Girl With Fire in Her Eyes). So please be careful when purchasing as neither Amazon nor the books themselves are very clear about volume numbers.

As for the book itself, Volume 2 introduces a new Flame Haze and starts hinting at more of a underlying plot. The main characters relationships also gets developed deeper. The fight scenes are decently written and lots of stuff gets blown up which should happen in any action series.

I really hope that we see more of the light novels make their way over here as so far the two are not enough.

Shana Light Novel (Not Manga)

This is not the manga for Shakugan no Shana, rather it is the light novel that was released in Japan and where the anime is based off. For anyone who watched the first shana anime series this will definitely feel like it's the exact same thing, but there are differences with this story and the anime (minor differences). Unto the review!

Note:
For those who are not aware this is a novel, it is entirely different from a manga (comic book in the U.S). This novel has very few pictures.

Pro:
The text is easy to read and not too difficult to understand (though there are some words that young adult readers might not know). The story is easy to understand as well, however, those who have read manga prior will have a bit easier time to digest the material as there are some reference to Japanese culture that you will need to either understand or look up on your own. The story focuses on life, school life, relationships and saving the world. Each element is represented fairly throughout the novel and the character development is one of it's strong points. While reading, you understand who Yuji Sakai is and the struggles he is facing; you get a feeling of how Shana feels towards Yuji and her Crimson guardian Alastor.

Con:
First of all, I deducted a star for this reason only, the novel cover and paper is not very good quality. I own the first 2 volumes and I have to say volume 2 uses a superior cover and better paper quality than the first (I don't understand why Viz used this quality for their first volume, maybe that's why the 2nd volume was changed and for the better).
Other than that, I would have to say one thing about the novel that is lacking, it doesn't reveal anything about Shana and who she is other than the fact that she is a flame haze, that is about the only complaint about the novel.

Conclusion:
If you have already seen the anime and would like to know where the anime got the ideas from, than this novel is the perfect resource for you. Those who have read manga and want to try something different, than this is for you as well. Those who are looking to read casually will find this book to be fairly easy to read and understand but as I mentioned earlier you will need to research some Japanese culture as you will run across to several while reading this. Recommended age is 12+ as some words may be too difficult to understand for readers under 12.

Shana Light Novel Vol 2

First this is not a manga, rather this is a novel. Those who are confused a manga is equivalent to a comic in the U.S whereas a light novel has very few pictures. Well unto the review!

For those who watched the anime this novel will be very similar to you since the anime got the idea from the light novel. In this volume Yuji and Shana are getting familiar with each other as Shana trains Yuji to fight against other Tomagaras. Without spoiling too much this volume covers the bond between Yuji and Shana and how they must work together to defeat those who are after the Reiji Maigo and destruction of human life (torches).

Overall this volume is a step up from the last. I also liked how Viz changed the overall look and feel of the novel by replacing the bad cover and washed out paper with a proper cover and clean paper. A definite must for those who have read volume 1 or those who have seen the anime.

Best Trading "Psychology" book of ALL TIME...

I had to read this book SEVERAL times before I "got it." When I finally did, my reaction was, "That's It?!?!" The answer is SO SIMPLE. The implementation may be difficult for you but the ANSWER itself is quite SIMPLE...

This is probably the best book on the REQUIRED psychology for trading that I have ever read. If you don't like it, it may be "too simple" for you and the messaged may go over your head as "unimportant." Read it again. Think about EVERY paragraph. "Am I doing that?" "Do I feel that way?" "Is this true for me yet?"

Worth the read

This book won't provide nitty-gritty tips, but will give the reader plenty to think about when it comes to their own trading. Definitely worth reading. In fact, I printed out the following advice from the book just to keep reminding myself of the simple truths of trading: Never add to a loser; add to a winner only; let profits run; cut losses fast; don't pick tops; don't pick bottoms; go with the trend. Yes, these are basic things, but as the book points out, it's important to review the basics every once in a while to keep from straying off the correct path.

It is the all-time 2nd best book for daytraders.

I train daytraders for a living, I make them read 2 books before they start: 'Reminiscences of a Stock Operator' and this book 'Zen in the Markets.' I quote it almost daily when instructing traders - Trade what you see, not what you think. It is a very quick read.

It is NOT for long-term stock investors, anyone reading it for those purposes will be disappointed and give it a negative review about how it downplays fundamentals, charts, technical patterns, and such. Short-term (like 1-2 minute in a trade) daytraders and pit traders are the ones who swear by this book, as I do. I traded on the floor of the exchange and still make my living in the quick in-and-out daytrading world, and for people like me this book is a must have.

High praise for William F. Buckley, Jr. ~ again.

William F. Buckley introduced to our Republic the undermining of the nation’s higher education via an unfortunate and relentless liberal agenda within academia. This Buckley classic reveals a disease that had infected most universities by the end of World War II ~ atheism and socialism. This book is an easy read and is a remarkable cultural achievement by the then 25 year old Buckley.

The forgotten subtitle of Buckley's book "academic freedom is a superstition" in America was correct and has been since the late 1890's when religious associations with their founding Christian churches were severed. The antecedents to both atheism and socialism within higher academia by 1900 were cast aside in the name of academic freedom of expression and progressiveness. Yale long ago lost the traditional values that placed it, at one time, among the nation’s elite.

Buckley pointed insight still rings true; "Freedom breeds inequality. Unless you have freedom to be unequal, there is no such thing as freedom."

There was no academic freedom at Yale in 1951 (or as early as the late 1890's) and there is certainly no freedom there now. If anything, this malignancy of academic bigotry (which Buckley so eloquently describes) has metastasized to the point that certain death awaits any Man who seeks God within the halls of Yale University.

Buckley is humorous while exposing the anti-Christian bigotry of the "sophisticated," "open-minded," and "tolerant" Left. No wonder the leaders of Yale hated Buckley's book. They prefer that parents and contributors send in their money without any pesky questions about what Yale was teaching.

God and Man at Yale is not a literary must-read, but it ranks among the classics of political and journalistic writing. The ideas presented are narrow in scope (as they should be), focusing exclusively on Yale, and the solutions presented by a 25-year-old Buckley are implausible (alumni do not hold any sway on the university). Gamay is the fascinating introduction of a budding writer whose career would be made on impulsive ideas, quick wit, and idiosyncratic writing style. Buyers considering this book should expect a dry read except for the introduction by Bramwell and foreword written by Buckley for the anniversary edition.

Seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin once said that Caravaggio came into the world to destroy painting. Helen Langdon's marvelous biography suggests that rather than destroying painting, the Milanese artist gave it a new lease on life. Upon his arrival in Rome, Caravaggio ended a tradition of Italian Renaissance painting with his radically new naturalistic style, which continues to dazzle and influence viewers today. Beautifully poised between biographical scholarship and artistic appreciation, Langdon's book provides the reader with a complex, fascinating portrait of Caravaggio, still the rebel and outsider of the popular imagination, but also immersed in the Roman world of art, politics, and patronage. Some of the finest sections of the book vividly evoke the streets and brothels of early 17th-century Rome, which provided Caravaggio with the inspiration for many of his early works. By contrast, the later sections--which deal with Caravaggio's exile and commissions in Naples, Malta, and Sicily--seem rather brief and truncated, giving the final third of the book a rather unbalanced feel. At once more scholarly and less polemical than Desmond Seward's 1998 Caravaggio: A Passionate Life, Langdon's study of the Renaissance painter conveys a picture of Michelangelo da Caravaggio (1573-1610) as an artist amid rivals and intrigues without losing sight of his work and its significance. Not that Langdon downplays the juicy bits: she offers documented details on the scandals and rivalries, but does so without sensationalism or dependence on conjecture. While Seward railed against homoerotic interpretations of Caravaggio's works, and seemed particularly hostile to Derek Jarman's highly speculative 1987 film, Caravaggio, Langdon is unfailingly even-handed. In keeping with her focus on Caravaggio the artist (as opposed to Seward's man of faith), Langdon presents the relationship with Cardinal Francesco del Monte, for whom he served as artist-in-residence, in terms of career significance rather than personal relationships. Through del Monte, Caravaggio made contacts with church officials and patrons, and also with other painters, many of whom became rivals or detractors. The last section of the book is a balanced account of Caravaggio's induction into the Catholic order of the Knights of Malta (an honor seemingly requiring him to have lied about his family's lineage), his imprisonment in a Maltese dungeon for dueling with a Knight of higher rank and his legendary escape. Without downplaying Caravaggio's personal oddity and violent tendencies, Langdon approaches her subject with a sympathetic yet almost clinical eye. She scours the archives, examining police documents and bringing court records to light. As clear a portrait as we can hope for, currently...

Langdon's research payed off in this beautiful look at one of the Late Renaissance's most powerful (and mysterious, and notorious) painters. Sadly, most of what we know of Michelangelo Caravaggio's life is through second-hand sources -- police records and such -- but Langdon seems to have pored through every bit of esoterica related to the painter's relation to his time, his culture, and his peers. What we get for her troubles is a portrait of a man whose devotion to religion was so strong that he would do anything -- including lying about his lineage -- to maintain a secure place as a "defender of the faith."
Sadly, the one-star review on this page has a point: many of Langdon's statements are qualified with "perhaps", "almost certainly," etc. This, however, is one of the prices we pay for any attempt to pin down an elusive person who lived on the fringes of a society which passed four hundred years ago. I much preferred this reading to, for example, Desmond Seward's CARAVAGGIO of the same year, in which the author ranted against any recent interpretations of homoeroticism in Caravaggio's sensual paintings, and even against the concept of Caravaggio -- a notoriously violent and tumultuous figure in the history of painting -- having actually earned his lifetime reputation as a criminal!
Beautifully illustrated, well documented, and written with both a sensitivity towards the subject and a refusal to let that sensitivity obscure "the dirt". ..this is a significant addition to the study of one of painting's more fascinating figures. I highly recommend it.

Light inside the Shadows

I found this book to be very entertaining as well as educational. The author did a great job of recreating the setting of Carravaggio's life; the important characters and atmosphere of all the places the artist lived in his nomadic life. Also, I look at Carravaggio's paintings in a new light and am even more impressed and moved by them than previously. Carravaggio's was a tragic life. The author captures the sense of impending doom that hanged over the artist's head like an executioner's sword. The author did a great job of bringing the artist to life with what little is actually known about him, through records, accounts, and most of all his paintings. Through it all there is the sense of an awesome talent and fragile ego, that both humbles and angers all who knew him. I came away realzing that Carravaggio was a man of his times as well as an artist of all time.

Daniel Leech-Wilkinson is a writer and broadcaster on medieval music. He is Reader in Historical Musicology at King's College, London and his previous books include studies and editions of the fourteenth-century poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut.

How early music performers got that way

The author tells us how medieval and early Renaissance music acquired its voices-cum-instruments interpretation, then shows that the recent shift to unaccompanied voices in music of these periods is the recovery of an earlier understanding. The first chapter, "The invention of the voices-and-instruments hypothesis," shows that those who rediscovered old music in the 19th century considered it purely vocal music. Even Hugo Riemann in his Musik Lexicon (1892 and 1893 editions) agreed completely. But in his 1905 edition, Riemann insisted that untexted parts of polyphonic songs were played on instruments, and many phrases of texted melodies were actually instrumental preludes, interludes and postludes. This soon became the standard point of view, for Riemann's book was a popular and influential reference. Guido Adler was one of the few scholars who disagreed. Medieval illustrations of singers and instrumentalists were misinterpreted to reinforce this thinking. In chapter 2, "The re-invention of the a cappella hypothesis," he recounts the early reaction to this orthodoxy in the 1950s and the turning point of Christopher Page's 1977 article in Early Music. Since then, Page, Andrew Parrott and Paul Hillier have led many performances and recordings that demonstrated the sound of early music without instruments, and David Fallows supported their efforts in his writings. Two more chapters fill in the background of the arguments. National prejudices and Nazi ideology come into play, and details are provided. No one who listens to early music will want to pass up this magisterial treatment of its 20th-century evolution. The fight is not yet over, for most recordings of this music still use instruments in the fashion that Leech-Wilkinson thoroughly discredits in this engaging book.
