About the Author

Peter Larson is founder and president of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, South Dakota, whose staff was responsible for excavating the T. rex known as "Stan." He lives in Hill City, South Dakota.

Kenneth Carpenter is the dinosaur paleontologist for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. He is author of Eggs, Nests, and Baby Dinosaurs (IUP, 2000) and editor of The Carnivorous Dinosaurs (IUP, 2005) and The Armored Dinosaurs (IUP, 2001). He lives in Aurora, Colorado.

Lots Of Stuff On T Rex

I really liked this book, it is a series of papers presented at a conference hosted by the Black Hills Institute (if memory serves). It contains most of the current state of discussions on T Rex of a few years ago. The articles range in technical detail - some are easy for a layman to read, some others are practically the same as what would be published in a technical journal, and very dense and opaque. But rewarding if you work through them. One article forced my to create a glossary and map of the skull bones so I could track the discussion. Not for those who enjoy pretty pictures, but those who want to know where the current thought is, several different sides of it. (Although the T. Rex as obligate scavenger POV was not as well represented as others)

At last, a T. Rex volume which is capable of bringing the world up to speed with recent discoveries. The Accompanying CD is fantastic. A great read and a comprehensive view of T.Rex/Bird similarities. Well done by all.

Great book !

This is the best book, to date, devoted entirely to the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex. While it is not perfect, it is as good as they get. I highly recommend this book. It will inspire those who will take us to the next level in understanding these magnificent creatures. I wish this book existed when I was doing my own research; it would have saved me quite a bit of time.

RENALD E. SHOWERS is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished theologians in America today. His work is known around the world, and he is in great demand as a visiting professor in colleges and seminaries. He is a graduate of Philadelphia College of Bible, holds a B.A. in history from Wheaton College, a Th.M. in church history from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Th.D. in theology from Grace Theological Seminary. He is a professor and international conference speaker for The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc., and a contributing editor for ISRAEL MY GLORY magazine.

God's Will Be Done

It is a pleasure to recommend this noteworthy addition to Dr. Showers growing collection of biblical studies in which he shows us the "continuing war of the ages between God and Satan". He goes on to state that over the ages humanity has been wrestling with three major questions: Where have we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? These questions set the stage for the author's chapter-by-chapter development of a philosophy of history as shown in the Bible--from eternity past to eternity future.

Along the way, Renald Showers gives us glimpses of how this battle between God and Satan has played out during various periods of history. During the past, present, and future we can see how this unfolds according to God's sovereign will. Being faithful to the use of a single normative method of interpretation across the whole of Scripture, Dr. Showers viewpoint is naturally premillennial, pre-tribulational, and normative dispensational.

In looking back at history, it is interesting to note that the apostasy of the church is linked to its becoming the official and only religion of the Roman Empire in 380 A.D. At that time, the church began to Christianize pagan practices (syncretism), and when joined with the state started persecuting other religions. Even though all other attempts since then have resulted in the same disaster (look at most of Europe), some evangelicals believe we should try again, and that we must subdue the world with Christianity so that Christ will be able to return...

Dr. Showers also shows how allegorical methods of interpreting the Scriptures can be traced back through Roman Catholic St. Augustine to Origen (185-254 A.D.). Through the influences of men like St. Augustine (354-430 A.D.), many errors entered the church, and church tradition became equal to, or above the authority of the Bible. Through his adoption of allegory, St. Augustine also became the first to reject premillennialism and taught that the Roman church is the kingdom. He also misinterpreted Scripture to support his persecution of groups like the Donatists who separated from and opposed the Church of Rome and infant baptism. This laid the groundwork for the Inquisitions. St. Augustine thus became the most influential of the founding fathers of the Roman Catholic Church, but it is ironic that he is still venerated by many influential evangelicals today like John Piper.

Since it is usually glossed over by historians, be sure to read the section, "The Internal Attacks Against Protestantism" which relates a brief history of groups like the Anabaptists and their persecution by other Reformers. Although John Calvin isn't mentioned by name, he was the most infamous. Finally, chapter 8 has a good discussion of the end times--from the rapture of the church to eternity future.

While my edition is only about 130 pages, as a history enthusiast, I still appreciated the author's concise treatment of each period. If you don't have the time or money to invest in Philip Schaff's "History of the Christian Church" this would be a good place to start. If you want a really concise guide to church history look for Dr. Showers' 25-page booklet "Two Millennia of Church History".

God's Thread: The Meaning And Plan Behind Human History......

This book looks at the expanse of human history from a biblical point of view, linking and making sense of its great figures/events/ movements, and in the process addressing the huge questions of life--who are we, what's the meaning of it all, why do the wicked prosper, how's it going to turn out, and so on. The author starts out in eternity past (pre-Adam and Eve) and keeps the flow of history moving along quickly and connectedly, all the while in parentheses noting the relevant verse citations to back up his assertions, evidencing that this philosophy of history is not based on private speculation, but on what is revealed in the Bible by a God who transcends time and space and really does have a plan that runs thru history.

The purpose of history or how God's Word delivers

I've had a great time reading this short book. Historical events are seen, at last, from a meaningful perspective: the long conflict between God's plan and Satan's revolutionary plan to spoil it. This is a gigantic work of synthesis of historical events, all flowing to an inevitable conclusion. But if it was (it is) inevitable then "why does God let the rebellion go on so long? Why couldn't He have demonstrated His sovereignty by crushing Satan as soon as he rebelled?" Well, the answer comes out pretty obvious at the end of the book. If you are the kind of history buff that always wonders why we still have so much evil in our crazy world -despite all the efforts against (apparently)- then this is your book.

If the trees don't let you see the wood, this will provide you with just the right vantage point.

AN INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS OF THE EVIDENCE IN THE CASE

Co-author Donald Freed wrote in an introductory section of this 1996 book, “I was at Dulles International Airport … The ‘Fuhrman Tapes’ were being argued in the O.J. Simpson case… I muttered, ‘So they DID frame the right man.’ A man standing next to me said, ‘We may never know because the lawyers are controlling the scientific evidence instead of the other way around.’ Four hours later… Professor Raymond Briggs had … explain[ed] to me how it would be possible to get inside the real-time of the killings with the help of computer analysis, and to create a kind of virtual reality of the crime scene…” (Pg. xi)

They note, “the Prosecution would hint broadly that the bloody evidence had been carried to Chicago and back in Simpson’s Louis Vuitton suitcase, then taken away and disposed of by longtime Simpson friend and consultant Robert Kardashian. Yet, the police did not request the bag when they searched Kardashian’s home on June 17, made minimal legal motions but did not question or call Kardashian during trial, and at summation merely held up the empty case for the jury to see and speculate on.” (Pg. 46)

They point out, “Why was no vegetation disturbed in the area where the glove was found at Rockingham if someone jumped over the fence there? Why was no blood seen initially on the socks found in O.J.s bedroom? Why was no blood seen on the rear gate at Nicole’s residence until three weeks after the murders? Why was Detective Vannatter carrying around a vial of O.J.’s blood? Why was Ron Goldman’s blood not discovered in O.J.’s Bronco until months after the murders?” (Pg. 73)

They observe, “The Ford Bronco is a loud, powerful four-wheel drive vehicle that creates too much automotive sound to avoid attention, especially given the ambient context after 10:00 PM on a Sunday, and the headlight sightlines existing near the corner of Rockingham and Ashford, where [limo driver Allan] Park waited. Even if Park was inside the limousine off and on, telephoning, he could still have a view across the driveway to the Rockingham gate where the Bronco was later found parked. Our demonstration made it abundantly clear … that because the Bronco makes a very loud noise, it would be unlikely that the limousine driver would not have heard or seen its approach.” (Pg. 100)

They suggest, “conduct your own experiment:… take a pair of leather gloves and pour wine or blood from meat on them. Put one out in the night, on the ground, from about 11 PM to 5 AM, and put the other in a closed plastic container. Check both gloves after this six-hour period. We believe that you will find that the glove left outside will be dry, and that the one packaged in the container will be moist. The glove found at Rockingham was moist.” (Pg. 129)

They note, “Lipstick was found on Ron’s cheek. This suggests that Nicole kissed him as he came in. We know he had gone home to clean up after Mezzaluna, so presumably the lipstick from not from someone at the restaurant. If it was Nicole’s, it would have been placed there before the attack. This would mean that both were assaulted at once, and this strongly suggests two assassins.” (Pg. 131)

They explain, “It is compelling to note that… all of the timeline witnesses who function as clocks to virtually exclude O.J. Simpson from the crime scene and the killing time--- believe that he is guilty: Pilnak, Park, Heidstra, Kaelin, Shively, ‘Jane Jones,’ and the other neighbors. Except for Park, all of these were declared hostile witnesses by the Prosecution, and none of them could understand why.” (Pg. 133)

They state, “Dr. Irwin Golden, the L.A. Deputy Coroner who had performed the autopsies, stated on direct exam in the preliminary trial that there were ‘two morphologically different types of stab wounds on the victims.’ Some, he said, were indicative of a single-edge blade, while others had a characteristically double-pointed or forked end. This meant that the wounds could have been made by two different weapons, which in turn suggests the possibility of two killers.” (Pg. 187)

They conclude, “instead of searching for who is to blame, this study has attempted to pursue the facts, and develop a new way to reach the truth. For the ‘facts,’ we have offered a summary of the trial and some of what our investigation has learned; for the way to the truth we have offered our competing scenarios and timelines. The rest we leave to you, the jury. The search goes on.” (Pg. 251)

The authors’ purported emphasis upon the “evidence” is mildly refreshing, but overall their claims to avoid reaching conclusions while supporting various alternative theories are not very persuasive. Those interested in the criminal trial may find their listings of evidence, and particularly their analysis of various “timelines,’ to be helpful.

Killing Time

Donald Freed is a historian, dramatist, and novelist. Raymond P. Briggs is a visual and cognitive scientist. Most of the books on this double murder were written by those who were involved with the trial. This is the first book with an outside and objective viewpoint. It contains the Autopsy Reports (but most would not understand the medical terms). The `Acknowledgments' thank all those who helped. The `Prologue' has a time-line for the events from June 1994 to October 1995. Technology affects political questions (the Zapruder film, the Pentagon Papers, the Watergate Tapes, the Rodney King Videotape).

Chapter 1 has the Prosecution's case, their story of the crime. Could a barking dog time an event? [No, dogs can't testify in court.] The Prosecution could not find an expert in the field of spousal abuse to testify for them (p.40). There was no proof that OJ ever owned a pair of Bruno Magli shoes. Witnesses contradicted the time of the murders (p.54). Chapter 2 has the Defense's arguments to challenge the Prosecution and suggest reasonable doubt (p.59). The Defense time-line is on pages 60 to 62. Many fingerprints at the murder scene did not match OJ (p.66). Neither did some blood samples. The Contested Evidence is listed on pages 69 to 72. The EDTA found on the socks and gate suggest evidence planted from the blood sample. The various time-lines are listed on pages 70 to 83, along with their problems. Bot the prosecution and defense claimed the murders occurred at 10:30 to 10:45pm! The limo driver saw no activity at OJ's compound at this time so it provides an alibi (p.85). "The gloves didn't fit" (p.89), they had Caucasian limb hair inside. The so-called "educated and professional classes" believed in the shoddy DNA evidence (p.90)! The limo driver's presence provided an alibi for OJ (p.104). If there is "something wrong" with the Prosecution and Defense scenarios then there must be another explanation (p.109).

Chapter 3 discusses alternate scenarios. The Prosecution's claims were not supported by missing evidence (p.110). Was there a "second man"? There is Unexplained Evidence (pp.127-131). The witnesses near Bundy gave testimony that excluded OJ as the murderer (p.133). Were there two killers (p.138)? Were drugs the cause of the murder (Chapter 4)? Was someone stalking Nicole (p.146)? Was there a threat to Ron (p.149)? Were drugs involved (p.151)? Was organized crime involved (p.166)? Chapter 5 discusses other killers, such as serial killer Glen Rogers (p.175). Were there two killers (p.177)? The failure to call the coroner prevented a better estimate of time of death (p.189). Chapter 6 discusses Mark Fuhrman's history. He found a moist-looking bloody glove at 6:06am (p.211) and had other activities (p.212). How did that one glove go from the murder scene to OJ's house? How did blood get into the Bronco (p.217)? [That Sherlock Holmes' case is "Silver Blaze" (p.219).] There is a short definition of the Black Dahlia Murder Case (p.222). The Singular manuscript contained information that could destroy the Prosecution's case (p.226). Chapter 7 says OJ was warned to "take Nicole and the children away" earlier (p.231). There are unanswered questions (p.232). What if Ron Goldman was the target and Nicole the innocent bystander (p.248)?

The Appendices cover ten subjects. The time-lines assume the murders occurred between 10pm and 11pm. This is not true. The blood of the victims would have been black and clotted when the bodies were found by the police at 12:15am. The red liquid blood suggests the murders took place about 11:30 to 11:40pm. A passing couple saw Nicole's body at 11:45. [The book "Forty Whacks" can tell you this, its about an older double murder.] Ron's height, weight, and age made him resemble Nicole's boy friend, another possible target. He went into hiding for months afterwards and was never questioned by the police or at the trial. [Page numbers refer to the hardcover edition.]

easy, comprehensive read

This book is written very well and it is an easy read. It is really comprehensive and tells you everything you need to know about being a SLP from an SLP's perspective. I like the way it discusses possible assessments and interventions that you can use for children with varying diagnosis. I recommend it to bachelor level speech-language assistants, graduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and practicing SLP's who would like a refresher or who are servicing children with diagnosis that they have less experience in providing therapy to.

I rented this book used for a fair price and it arrived in the mail with water damage. I did not complain and was still able to use it easily. I returned the book and found out that they rejected the return because of the water damage that I did not do!! I was charged 95 dollars for the damage!!!!

Basic text, bogs down talking about RTI and decision making

I am a student who used this textbook for an undergraduate course in language disorders. While I don't have the credentials or experience to evaluate the accuracy or usefulness of the information presented, I found the text to be boring and unsatisfying from a student's perspective. I wanted to know more about children with language disorders, what language disorders are and how to treat them, but I feel that the textbook delivered relatively little of that. Instead, there were lengthy conceptual descriptions of language theory, types of assessment, decision-making strategies for the clinician, and the virtues of the RTI method of classroom-based instruction as contrasted with the pull-out service delivery method. I feel that most of these topics are more suited to a textbook on educational theory than a textbook on language disorders.

The parts of the textbook I found relatively helpful were the "Principles of Intervention" chapter that outlined language facilitation techniques such as expansions and buildup/breakdown, and the chapter on "Children with Intellectual Disability", which described several different syndromes and offered some treatment suggestions such as the Functional Communication Approach and the IT's FUN PROGRAM. I may refer to these chapters in the future. However, I would have liked more thorough coverage of these topics, and this text only introduced each approach briefly.

This text also has chapters on Autism Spectrum Disorders, Children with Hearing Loss, Literacy, and AAC, but since I feel that these topics really each deserve a textbook or more of their own and I will study them more in depth in other classes, these introductory chapters were not very valuable to me.

I also have Rhea Paul's Language Disorders text, which I find to be more thorough, more engagingly written, and more packed with practical advice for clinicians. While Paul's text is written in full sentences and paragraphs with double columns and a lot of information on each page, this textbook by Kaderavek has wide margins with too much white space, giving a visual impression of being skimpy on information. Kaderavek also overuses bullet point lists, tables and pop-out text boxes. Here are three sentences that form half of a small text box at the bottom of a page:

"Several early literacy curricula have been evaluated in research programs and have shown clinical efficacy. You can find out more about these curricula by reading about them on the Internet. Make a list of the pros and cons of using an already-developed curriculum in contrast to developing your own goals and activities."

The first sentence is vague fluff, the second is obvious, and the third is a pointless command for me to do unnecessary work. This is an example of how the already skimpy-on-the-page text wastes words and wastes my time.

All heart

GREAT book

Amazing book and very engaging. I was always looking for a way to simply live in the "now", because I was always either thinking about my past or imaging what my future holds. The now seemed not worthy to think about, how wrong I was!
Read this book if you want to enjoy life to its fullest.

Beautiful truth on the nature of the human 'being'

Thank you for this book which delves a little deeper into the truth of who you are and what you are. It seems to point to an infinte potential already within, that the reader may not have been aware of prior to reading. It combines humor and some heart felt moments at times which seem to add to the books authenticity. Practical experiences outlined in the chapters, allow the reader to rest as the title suggests.....as the peace that they already are in 'The Ocean of Now'...........
