Basic text of innovative scientist and healer, disappointing translation
By Leigh Glanville
This volume provides both an introduction to and a summary of over 50 years of cancer research and treatment. Johanna Budwig (1908-2003) who was nominated for the Nobel Prize seven times was one of Germany's leading scientists of the 20th Century, a biochemist and blood specialist with a special interest in fats. Working with Otto Warburg's research into cancer and cellular oxygen-deficiency, she identified in 1951 the precise biochemical breakdown point which results in cancer. Studying the blood of cancer sufferers, she identified cancer principally as a "fat" problem.

She was one of the first to help define the categories of fats into the types that are accepted today. Dr Budwig theorized that restricting the ingestion of the "bad fats" (trans-fats, hydrogenated and saturated fats), while at the same time ingesting plenty of the "good fats" (along with a diet of fresh living foods and juices) would rejuvenate even cancerous cells, oxygenating them once again and healing the sufferer in a healthy way from the inside. Her work therefore stood in opposition to medical orthodoxy with its preference for chemotherapy and irradiation and to the interests representing these.

She chose flax oil as the source of the most abundant supply of the good fats. She knew also that these must be bonded to sulpherated proteins for them to be made water-soluble and easily assimilated by the cells of the body. For this she used quark or cottage cheese (which contains an abundance of such proteins) in a certain ratio to the oil.

In using this Oil-Protein formula with her patients what she found was gratifying indeed. Over a period of approximately 3 months tumours gradually receded. The blood became a healthy red colour, anaemia disappeared and life-energy was restored. Because of the influence of the powerful oil-processing industry in Germany, Dr Budwig was denied publication in medical journals. Nevertheless she continued to publish her research and to treat seriously ill patients with a Protocol that she specially designed. In 50 years of treating cancer sufferers (including many given up by conventional treatment as "terminal") she claimed a success-rate of greater than 90% as long as the Protocol was used correctly.

This volume collects various presentations, interviews and letters to and from Dr Budwig over a 50-year period. Some scientific explanations for her theories and practices are presented which may be difficult to comprehend for the non-scientifically-minded. It is clear that Dr Budwig understood the human being as a being of body, soul and spirit... and that she fully understood that Science and Medicine must learn once again to speak the language of Nature's laws and to cooperate with them if true and lasting healing is to be achieved in the realm of illnesses such as cancer.

Dr Budwig published 15 books in German but only three have so far appeared in English. This volume complements the other two which are currently available, namely "Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases" and "The Oil-Protein Diet Cookbook".

However, sadly in terms of the translation from the German and basic editing this volume falls somewhat short of the standards expected of modern scholarship and publishing (hence only 4 stars given). One hopes for the sake of Johanna Budwig's legacy and her most important contribution to humanity that any future editions will have addressed these shortcomings.

The Abrams family of tanks has been America's premier main battle tank for over 30 years, and remains arguably one of the most formidable tanks in the world. The first tank to boast a power plant with a 1,500-h.p. gas turbine, the M1 also features air conditioning - primarily for its advanced electronics, but also, by default, for its crews. Conceived during the height of the Cold War, the Abrams has never been called upon to combat a global superpower, but nevertheless has seen extensive combat - particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. This volume focuses on those combat experiences, in particular the victories and losses of the Abrams and crews on the front lines. Illustrated with more than 230 photographs plus detailed line drawings and a color profile.

Solid Book on the Abrams in 21st Century Service
By scottosaurus
Following Squadron's current 80 page format, this book focuses on the M1 Abrams family, mostly in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2003. There is some coverage of the development and Cold War history of the Abrams, as well as some pages devoted to the Abrams' baptism of fire during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Likewise, there is a bit of coverage of non-combat American use and foreign users of the Abrams, but this book very much sets its sights on the Abrams in US combat service over the past decade. There is some good coverage of Marine Corps use of the M1A1, including shots of the vehicles on board amphibious assault ships and LCACs.

The book has extensive coverage of the Abrams in both Afghanistan and Iraq, with plenty of photographs of the vehicles in action. Aside from showing details of markings, modifications (including the TUSK upgrade package), weathering, and vehicle stowage, there are a number of photographs that show damaged and destroyed Abrams. Several sequences also show the recovery of damaged vehicles. As always, the photographs are clearly reproduced and have been carefully chosen, and the author's signature detailed, informative, and accurate captions significantly enhance this book.

While I would have liked more coverage of the earlier years of the Abrams, I understand that the previous Squadron Abrams in Action title, as well as Richard Hunnicutt's superb volume on the Abrams, provide lots of information on the development of the Abrams and its service in Germany during the Cold War. Likewise, many books contained coverage of the Abrams during Operation Desert Storm, so this book picks up the story, so to speak, bringing the Abrams into the 21st century. As such, it is a useful supplement for the many books published on the Abrams during the 1980s and 1990s, and well worth getting for that reason alone.

This book will be of great use to modellers wishing to build an Abrams in the 21st century, as well as anybody interested in modern military vehicles. Highly recommended for anybody interested in the operational use of the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams since 2001.

Photo-Guide to a Killer Tank!
By Mike O'Connor
David Doyle's M1 ABRAMS IN ACTION is a comprehensive, colorful photo-guide to Chrysler's legendary 'master of the battlefield.'

As per the IN ACTION format, Doyle's 80-page book is jam-packed with well-reproduced, well-captioned photographs of the M1, M1A1 and M1A2 models. Along with general arrangement pix, there are many, many 'up-close-and-personal' detail shots of the M1's exterior. Then too, many of the photographs were contributed by Army vets of Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom so readers get a good idea of what tanks in combat actually look like. It's interesting to see how the basic model has evolved, especially on the basis of the fighting it's seen (i.e. the TUSK and CREW enhancements). It's also amazing to see how much 'stuff' ended up on some of the tanks pictured in Doyle's book.

Tank buffs and plastic modelers alike will enjoy M1 ABRAMS IN ACTION. It presents an informative guide to a legendary tank in action. Recommended.

Lacking
By ASM
The content of this book is lacking in almost every aspect I can think of and I struggle to find the point with it and why it needs to be 80 pages long. The truth is probably that there aren't any point except (otherwise well earned) money for the publisher. There are some nice pictures of the tank in Iraq but if you plan to learn anything about the Abrams old or new this book is a total failure made with apparently little or no inspiration and enthusiasm. The M1 deserves much much better!

The Great Starvation Experiment: Ancel Keys and the Men Who Starved for Science, by Todd Tucker

“The Great Starvation Experiment is wide-ranging, weaving progress in the war into the day-to-day suffering of the hungry volunteers.” —Saint Paul Pioneer Press

“Fascinating . . .” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

Near the end of World War II, thirty-six conscientious objectors volunteered to be systematically starved for renowned scientist Ancel Keys’s study at the University of Minnesota in the basement of Memorial Stadium. Aimed to benefit relief efforts in war-ravaged Europe and Asia, the study sought the best way to rehabilitate starving citizens. Tucker captures a lost moment in American history—a time when stanch idealism and a deep willingness to sacrifice trumped even basic human needs.

“Tucker provides a fascinating and moving history of the experiment, centering on the lives and experiences of the volunteers and the formidable obstacles they overcame. Tucker tells the story with verve and economy. . . . Keys, his experiment and his 36 starving men form a compelling combination.” —Publishers Weekly

Todd Tucker is the author of several books, including Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan (2004). He served on the legendary Navy submarine USS Alabama before moving to Valparaiso, Indiana.

From Publishers Weekly
As WWII neared an end, 36 idealistic conscientious objectors, members of the Civilian Public Service, volunteered to be systematically starved. The project, headed by Dr. Ancel Keys, was designed to develop an understanding of the physiology and psychology of starvation and to provide strategies to manage the mass starvation that might follow the war's end in Europe. Tucker (Notre Dame vs. the Klan) provides a fascinating and moving history of the experiment, centering on the lives and experiences of the volunteers and the formidable obstacles they overcame. Tucker tells the story with verve and economy, providing provocative discussions on subjects ranging from the ethical problems inherent in the use of human volunteers to the history of cannibalism and the conscientious objector movement. One strength of the book is the tension and drama evident as the subjects struggle with their hunger. Another strength is the charismatic Dr. Keys (who invented the K ration), an accomplished man who combined compassion and intelligence with an unquenchable desire to advance learning (he later raised the first alarms about the dangers of cholesterol and fat in the American diet). Keys, his experiment and his 36 starving men form a compelling combination. 8 pages of b&w photos. (May 2)

From Booklist
The heroic men of the title were 36 conscientious objectors who, at the end of World War II, volunteered to take part in a yearlong experiment on starvation. They were assigned to the Civilian Public Service Corp. Dr. Ancel Keys, the inventor of the K-ration, headed the experiment. For six months, the men ate a rigorously restricted diet similar to the wartime rations of Europeans. Many of these people, especially survivors of the concentration camps, were dying from malnutrition. During the next six months, Dr. Keys studied their rehabilitation in an effort to understand how best to help feed the starving people after the war. Tucker interviewed 12 of the volunteers and Dr. Keys, and this book chronicles their arduous undertaking and recounts the knowledge gained from the study. Bizarre but true. George Cohen

Review
"Not only has Todd Tucker uncovered an extraordinary and virtually unknown story from World War II, he has told it in a masterful way. The Great Starvation Experiment is absolutely first-rate."

-- Andrew Carroll, editor of the national bestselling War Letters and Behind the Lines

"The Great Starvation Experiment is a gracefully written account of one of the most inspiring stories of moral and political courage to emerge from the Second World War. Tucker explores questions about the nature of heroism and sacrifice that are particularly provocative and relevant now, when Americans are again waging war and facing difficult moral choices."

-- Thurston Clarke, author of Ask Not: The Inauguration of John F. Kennedy and the Speech That Changed America

"Courage comes in many vessels. This captivating book recalls a team of conscientious objectors who wouldn't fight -- but they would starve in the service of humanity. Part science, part philosophy, and pure human drama."

-- David Von Drehle, author of Triangle

"Unique and absorbing."

-- Alex Kershaw, author of The Longest Winter and The Bedford Boys

A Different Kind of War Hero
By takingadayoff
In the final months of World War II, thirty-six Americans were held in a bunker hidden away from the public. They were systematically starved until they had lost a quarter of their weight. The men suffered a range of symptoms (aside from extreme weight loss) including incapacitating weakness and constant headaches. One man chopped off three of his fingers to escape the agony. The Americans were starved under the supervision of a doctor who was conducting an experiment.

Sounds like a tale of Nazi atrocities, but Todd Tucker's Great Starvation Experiment is about a group of conscientious objectors who volunteered for this experiment in order to learn how best to aid the recovery of starvation victims. The doctor in charge, Ancel Keys, later became famous for discovering the relationship between fatty diets and heart disease.

In addition to covering the experiment itself, Tucker gives us a biography of Dr. Keys, a short history of the conscientious objector in America, and brings up the question of ethics in medicine. After the Nuremberg Trials, the Nuremberg Code was written, an international document detailing standards governing medical experimentation on humans. U.S. doctors refused to accept the code, claiming they were already bound by their own extremely high standards. Tucker presents evidence that not all American doctors felt bound by personal and professional ethics and conducted some rather alarming and harmful experiments on people, usually without their knowledge.

The Great Starvation Experiment is readable and entertaining. It was so readable, with snippets of conversation and anecdotes, that I began to doubt its reliability. But the extensive bibliography, detailed notes, and many interviews convinced me that this is a complete and factual story of a little-known episode of the World War II homefront.

A Different Kind of War Hero
By Frank Ramirez
As the veterans of World War II begin their inevitiable departure folks realize that if they're going to honor them it'd better be soon. The same goes for a different kind of war hero, the conscientious objectors who were willing not only to stand up for their beliefs in the face of overwhelming disdain, but were just as willing to risk their lives to serve humanity through Civilian Public Service.

Over the years I've met some of the Brethren, Mennonites, Friends, and others who refused to serve because of their religious beliefs. They were anything but cowards. Some pioneered the science of Smoke Jumping, others exposed the abuses of nuring homes and asylums, while many served as medical guinea pigs.

I met one of the latter about fifteen years ago, a man named Carlysle Frederick, who once admitted under questioning that he'd taken part in the starvation experiment. I wrote a few articles about him, but I always felt the story needed to be widely known.

Thank heavens for this book. The author has done his homework, and carefully examines the ethical questions that undergird what was a daring and almost brutal experiment which has, as the subtitle suggests, saved millions of lives over the year.

One cannot read this book without admiring both the calm and measured religious convictions of the three historic peace churches, the Brethren, the Mennonites, and the Friends, as well as the many others from other traditions.

The heroism of the participants, the extreme privations they endured, and their good humor, all deriving from their desire to serve humanity during their service through CPS, is worth honoring as another way to be patriotic.

For those who want to know more about CPS and related forms of service for peace, I also recommend the book A Cup of Cold Water, by J. Kenneth Kreider.

Utterly absorbing
By Carole Burrage
"The Great Starvation Experiment" is a fascinating telling of a little-known piece of American history. While a previous reviewer lambasted the author for giving histories of Dr. Ancel Keys, conscientious objectors, historic peace churches, the Civilian Public Service, and the Experiment volunteers, I found that background information absolutely essential to understand how and why the experiment occurred. Without a basic knowledge of the aforementioned, the Starvation Experiment would seem hardly distinguishable from the sadistic medical experimentations that took place in Nazi concentration camps. As it was, 36 idealistic young men volunteered without pay for an entire year to be systematically starved in order to provide the data that would enable relief workers to rehabilitate famine victims most effectively. Truly, it's a page-turning story of peaceable heroes,

  • The saga of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, the world's most famous science-fiction newspaper strip, continues with Volume Three of Hermes Press' complete reprint of this ground-breaking title. Volume Three has it all: space ships, anti-gravity belts, damsels in distress, invaders from other worlds, nefarious villains, and, of course, heroes.
  • Included in this volume are two more years of the strip, from 1932 to 1934, as well as a special 16-page introductory essay by noted science-fiction writer and pop-culture historian Ron Goulart and an afterword detailing how many of the predications about the future from the strip came to pass just as Buck Rogers had visualized.

Next volume in this classic comic strip reprint.
By Michael R. Brown
Here we have the third volume of the complete reprinting of Buck Rogers dailies. This volume picked up where the last one left off, reprinting the next 6 stories: "Beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet" (5/16/32 to 8/29/32), "Asterite Invaders" (8/30/32 to 2/24/33), "The Great Wolves of Jupiter" (2/25/33 to 6/22/33), "In the City of Floating Globes" (6/23/33 to 9/1/33), "Depth Men of Jupiter" (9/2/33 to 11/8/33), "Tika of the Tidegates" (11/9/33 to 1/20/34).

As in previous volumes, there is an introductory article, this one by Flint Dille, the current head of the Dille Family Trust, which owns the Buck Rogers property.

As I noted in my review of the first volume, the Buck Rogers strips of this period leave a lot to be desired. The artwork continues to improve, the writing not so much. Too often the characters are two dimensional. The petty jealousy nonsense of past strips are gone, but you still see silly actions by characters. Too often these strips are driven by the issues between Buck & Wilma vs Killer Kane & Ardala.

In this volume, Buck and Wilma travel to Greenland, yet another 'high tech' land of the future; they deal with a civil war between miniature people (Asterites) that threatens the Earth; and travel to Jupiter.

It seems that Earth is now under the rule of the "Council of Science", a UN of the future. We went from the future US liberating itself from the Mongols (the focus of the strips in the first volume) to starting to learn about the rest of the world (and seeing it wasn't all ruled by the Mongols, which seemed to be the case in the earlier strips). Now we suddenly have a world government which occurred while Buck & co. were off in space.

Technology continues to change/improve. We go from the jump belts of the first volume to anti-gravity belts in this volume, to those being improved with a propulsion system into a sort of 'anti-grav rocket pack'.

Dr. Huer comes back in the third story, along with 2 characters from the first volume. I was surprised considered the amount of time since these 2 were in the strip that we weren't properly re-introduced to them.

We also have a long period of Buck and friends on Jupiter, which covers the 3 final stories. Of course, this is NOT the Jupiter we know, but what some imagined it in the 1930s. Here, we find an earth-like environment (after all, Buck and friends find a human from Jupiter in the first volume, why be surprised at that). Here, earth-like conditions exist on high plains miles above the surface (where the pressure is so high, helium is drink instead of water, and mercury is a solid), and we find human civilization. But even in the high pressure depths, we find human (of a sort) civilization.

I noted bad writing early on, and some of them deal with the trials that Buck (& Wilma) often have to go thru. Its sort of like to create drama instead of the jealousy nonsense of past story lines, we get the return of Buck & Wilma being wrongly accused of things and having to clear their names. In the first storyline when they go to Greenland to take care of Kane & Ardala, they run afoul of some cops who think THEY are K&A and capture them, despite their protests. They are freed when they get to the proper authorities, but this is just the mildest of such events. Some of the worse exist in the later storylines on Jupiter.

But, I look forward to the next volume, and the long awaited one reprinting the Sunday strips, which had separate storylines.

More Nowlan/Calkins Buck Rogers
By Jim Davis
I am surprised at how much I am enjoying these Buck Rogers reprints.

All comic reprint projects have to be judged on two separate levels. The first level is strictly concerned with how well the strip has been reproduced, packaged, and priced. These Hermes volumes get five stars on this score. Each strip seems to reproduced at at least the same size as originally seen in your local paper. The strip's heading, title and credits are reproduced along with the strip itself. There are two strips per page. The reproduction to my admittedly non expert eye looks superb. There is a nice 8 page introduction by Flint Dille whose family owns the rights to Buck Rogers illustrated with color reproductions of various Buck comic books, movie posters, etc. The book is attractively bound in 9-1/4" x 12" landscape format with cloth covers and dust jacket. The retail price of $40 seem quite in line with other projects of this type.

The only let down is that it's not possible to date the individual strips from the book itself. The strips run from 5/14/32 to 1/20/23. I had to look this up on wikipedia. In this book the title of each strip changes from "Buck Rogers, 2432 A.D." to a more generic "Buck Rogers, 25th. Century A.D." so even that small clue is gone. I can't understand why Hermes decided not to provide this information.

The second level on which reprint projects are judged is the quality of the art and story on their own merits with considerations for such things as nostalgia set aside. Calkins is not the most gifted artist by a wide margin but there does seem to be a degree of improvement as we go along. He seems to be going for a more realistic than cartoonish or caricature look. Nowlan's strips don't offer much improvement in characterization (Kane and Ardala get tiresome very quickly) but the plots are surprising well laid out and resolved and their is a considerable amount of thought given to the scientific and technical details. Though not always accurate, they are consistent. The "gyrocosmic relativator", for example, is a typical fictional inertialess drive but the consequences of such a device are interestingly gone into for a number of pages. The depiction of Jupiter is also well thought out.

All in all very entertaining stuff and I can't wait for more. I'm not sure I could recommend this "cold turkey" to an adult even if otherwise a fan of imaginative fiction but if you know what you're in for you'll like this book.

Buck Rogers Complete Dailies Volume 3
By Brent A. Nighswonger
This is the latest Buck Rogers volume from Hermes Press and reprints the daily strips from 1932-1934. As with the previous 2 volumes, reproduction is good and with almost 300 pages, there is plenty to read. The strips are printed 2 to a page, and there is an interesting introduction from Flint Dille, grandson of the man who launched the strip in 1929.

There are 6 episodes in this volume. After a long trip in space in Volume 2, Buck and Wilma are back on earth, at least for the 1st half of the book. I'm almost to the 2nd half at this writing.

I read volumes 1 and 2 in order, so I have been immersed in this series for a few months. I have enjoyed these stories. They have their strengths and their shortcomings. Part of their attraction for me comes from reading the old Chelsea House book from 1969. The stories in that book ultimately stopped short of their endings in most cases, and I always wanted to see how they ended! With this series I have been able to catch up on those. The stories are very much of the time and I suspect familiarized the general public to concepts like weightlessness, re-entry friction, etc. The space ships are built of iron and have abundant rivets. There is a great deal of imagination spread around these stories, so where the science is lacking, fancy takes over and fills in the gaps. Antigravity belts and paralysis guns are everywhere.

The art on the strip is not always pretty. From the beginning of the strips thru the middle of this book the drawings are often sketchy. Anatomy is sometimes peculiarly rendered. I can see by leafing thru the back of the book that the art cleans up and becomes more slick. This is probably due to the addition of assistants to Dick Calkins, the primary artist. Writing-wise, the characters often succumb to petty jealousies and that drives the story. Characterization is usually one-dimensional and not the forte of the writer, Phillip Nowlan.

Having said that, the stories are fun and involving. I give this book a 5 star rating just because I like it so much. YMMV. I eagerly await the release of the Sunday collection and further volumes of dailies. Now if Hermes would just get them out quicker...
