About the Author
Ira Pohl is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. His research interests include artificial intelligence, the C and C++ programming languages, practical complexity problems, heuristic search methods, deductive algorithms, and educational and social issues. He originated error analysis in heuristic search methods and deductive algorithms. Professor Pohl was formerly a Mackay professor at University of California- Berkeley and a ZWO fellow in the Netherlands. For those who are weary of jargon filled books that promise to teach you C++ in 3 days or whatever- get this book! It makes no pretensions of any sort, but if you study it undisturbed for a few hours , you will have most of your questions about C++ answered. Amazingly deep insight in a deceptively dimunitive book

Great but tough

Elegant, challenging, and thoughtful. The exercises at the end of each chapter are very useful. One of the few books available that fully explains one why C++ is structured the way it is and why one should take advantage of its unique features. It is tough going because the author assumes that the reader will work hard. I like that but was often puzzled by various items and found myself going to other books for less terse explanations.

About the Author
Ansel C. Ugural, Ph.D., is a visiting professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has held various faculty and administrative positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and previously taught at the University of Wisconsin. A good introduction to advanced mechanics, with faults

I used this book to teach a graduate level mechanics of materials course. The students were relatively satisfied with the book, but it has some weaknesses.

1) The pedagogy of the book is somewhat weak. It is only moderately suited for self study.

2) The derivations shown skip steps to the point where they approach sleight of hand.

3) There are errors in some of the derivations. I found the same errors in the third edition. It is disappointing that these haven't been fixed.

On the positive side, the books includes a comprehensive set of topics, each of which are covered sufficiently for introductory purposes. It also gives a good introduction to plasticity, which most mechanics books skip.

Of the advanced mechanics books out there, it is in the upper half.

Content is OK, but this textbook is full of typos and errors

I used this textbook for my undergraduate class. The problem sets were good, but the textbook contained so many errors that my professor asked us not to read the book to avoid confusion. The most starling error is the one of the moment of inertia equations in the back of the book. Do not use this textbook as a reference book.

Not a great presentation of the material

This book struggles to find a good voice to present the material. It's examples are okay, the problems take a bit of work to exactly figure out what is being asked on occasion. The book overall doesn't do a decent job at presenting new concepts. I only have this book because it was required for the course I am taking and I have barely cracked it open as I can get by better with the course notes and google.

Has excellent chapters on business plans & pro-formas, but not the best guide to starting a business otherwise.

This book is dry and scholarly like a textbook as the title implies. It's not of much use to a small business or by any means covers a fraction of the things any business needs to know. The one area this bpbook is outstanding compared to others I've read about starting businesses, especially small ones is it's superior coverage of writing business plans and writing your pro-forma statement. For those two topics, it's essential reading unless you look for the info online.

Otherwise, Rieva Lesonsky's AWESOME "Start Your Own Business" is a TRUE encyclopedic resource covering virtually all aspects of starting any business, big or small, that is a "true MBA" on the subject. It covers many topics other books don't, especially this one, is an easy read that gets to the point, and only BOOKS on specific topics like e-commerce or accounting have much more to add.

This book seems to be taken from a similar text book by the authors and used in the Entrepreneurship 510 class at Devry University (just to be clear, my text book for this class is also by Bygrave and Zakarakis and simply entitled "Entrepreneurship" (my copy is a Devry ediion with the Devry cover on it but the text is actually from the authors above 2nd edition). Although the chapter layout is not quite the same, the text within it is the same. The ISBN on my book is 978-0-470-45037-6 (pbk).If you are planning on attending this school or notice that your Entrepreneurship class book has the same authors, I'd be wary of buying this book as I am certain that the information contained in both is extremely similar, just organized a little different.

He received his MS in industrial administration in 1965 and PhD in economics in 1966, both from Carnegie-Mellon University. He joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1965, where he has held positions in Mathematical Economics, Management and Information Sciences, Accounting, and in the law school. He directs the University’s Directors’ College and co-founded (now co-directs) the Chicago/Stanford/Wharton Directors’ Consortium, which trains corporate board members to do their jobs better; his own specialty in that training focuses on financial literacy. He has been a CPA in Illinois since 1973 and a CMA since 1974. He has served on the faculties of the Georgia Institute of Technology, New York University Law School, and Stanford University in its Graduate School of Business, Economics Department, and Law School. At Stanford, he has, since its inception, organized the sessions at Directors’ College on Audit Committee duties. He has served on the Board of Academic Advisors of the U.S. Business School in Prague and has taught there. He has served on the accrediting committee of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business.

Peter B. Frank is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Daymon, Worldwide Associates, Inc., in Stamford, Connecticut. He is a retired PricewaterhouseCoopers partner, where he served as a member of its global leadership and as its Global Risk Management Partner. Prior to the merger with Coopers & Lybrand, Mr. Frank was a Vice Chairman of Price Waterhouse. Mr. Frank spent the bulk of his professional career leading the Price Waterhouse dispute analysis, bankruptcy, and business turnaround practice. He served on that firm’s Policy Board (Board of Directors) and its Management Committee. For more than 30 years, Mr. Frank has acted as a management consultant and expert witness for litigation, government, and industrial clients.

Michael J. Wagner earned his undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of Santa Clara in 1969, his MBA from UCLA in 1971, and his JD degree from Loyola University at Los Angeles in 1975. He is a licensed attorney and CPA in the state of California.

About the Author

Larry Gonick has been creating comics that explain math, history, science, and other big subjects for more than forty years. He has been a calculus instructor at Harvard (where he earned his BA and MA in mathematics) and a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT, and he is currently staff cartoonist for Muse magazine. He lives in San Francisco, California.

Craig Criddle is a professor of environmental engineering and science at Stanford University and has written numerous scientific papers.

A painless intro to a difficult subject

This is a great intro to Chemistry. I am a substitute teacher, and his books give me a solid overview of various subjects I am called upon to teach. I find that the regular teachers of these subjects are often familiar with his books, and respect them. Mr. Gonick holds a Master's degree from Harvard in mathematics.

Great Drawing Book

This book is one of the best drawing books I've encountered, probably the best botanical drawing book out there. It presents pretty no-nonsense process of handling plant specimens and identifying plant parts--including dissections and lighting, placement, and storage. West outlines basic techniques in graphite, ink, scraper board, water-color, gouache, and acrylic. No explanation of use of pastels or oil or colored pencil (which i am particularly interested in). More color pictures would have made the painting explanations more comprehensible. Still, a great book to have in one's botalical illustration arsenal.
