About the Author

Greg Perry is a speaker and writer in both the programming and applications sides of computing. He is known for bringing programming topics down to the beginner’s level. Perry has been a programmer and trainer for two decades. He received his first degree in computer science and then earned a Master’s degree in corporate finance. Besides writing, he consults and lectures across the country, including at the acclaimed Software Development programming conferences. Perry is the author of more than 75 other computer books. In his spare time, he gives lectures on traveling in Italy, his second favorite place to be.

Dean Miller is a writer and editor with more than 20 years of experience in both the publishing and licensed consumer product businesses. Great Book!!!

I would like to thank the author for doing such a good job with this book. He explains programming concepts clearly and gives example programs to hammer these concepts home. There are 32 chapters and they are short which I really like. There have been some books that ramble for 30+ pages before even a line of code. Not this book, a couple pages at most and then to coding. Programming is very difficult for me and always has been. This book has helped me a great deal. I actually wrote a couple simple programs. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have dabbled with VB, C# and JavaScript. I should have started with C. C is like the parent of the others and the "genetic code" has been passed down to the other languages. If you are a Newbie, start here if you are looking for a simple but full understanding. Good luck!!! Anyone have recommendations as to what the next C book should be? I am very interested in data acquisition and graphing live data.

Good book but Kindle version is horrible

This is a good book for someone looking to learn C from the scratch but the Kindle version of the book is a disappointment and should be avoided. Buy printed book instead. I own the Kindle version and in it to view the code you have to click on the "click here to view code image" link on a lot of pages which takes you to the code. On Kindle for PC one can go back to original reading position by pressing back button after viewing the code but on Kindle for iPad, I couldn't find a way to go back after viewing the code. That resulted in wastage of a lot of time.

Also the kindle version is full of sentences like the following:

"If the or is a prefix, C computes it before anything else on the line. If the or is a postfix, C computes it after everything else on the line finishes. Because the in the preceding code is a prefix."

This sentence has some text missing from it and some of such sentences are not accompanied by "click here to view code image" option and hence such sentences don't make any sense. Looks like no one even bothered to proof-read the Kindle version of this book. Such issues have turned a book deserving 5-star review into one with a 2-star review.

From now onwards I'll think twice before buying a coding book on Kindle.

Clearly written

This is a clearly written introduction to C for people who haven't coded before. If you're a newbie to coding and mention of pointers has you breaking out in a cold sweat, then I'd recommend this book. If you're looking for something a bit more sophisticated, something that covers things like pointers to functions and linked lists, look elsewhere -- my favorites are Kochan's "Programming in C" and Horton's "Beginning C."

Good Book, but expect to bring other references during the exam.

I just took the last PE exam and found this book to be helpful. You'll really need to buckle down and read through it though. If you want to pass, I suggest bringing a minimum of three reference books. This book, Hiner's book and the ASCE 7-05. I brought the IBC but didn't have to use it. This book along with Hinder's had most of the references that I needed. Some questions required the ASCE 7-05. I didn't have the ASCE 7-05 :(

In any case I was able to pass by studying through this WHOLE book and Hiner's WHOLE book. I didn't take any classes.

Lists for Living...is so much fun and actually has real advice for your life.

This book was given to me as a gift from my sister. If Oprah Winfrey had her book list from the Oprah Show, I think Myrna Ossin would be a guest on that show. She clearly has a vast wealth of knowledge of lists for your life. Everyone can use this book and learn from it. It is not only an archive of to-do’s lists, it is like having access to a brain of someone who thinks of everything. It was just fun to read cover to cover. I gave Lists for Living as a gift to my mother-in-law and she couldn’t stop talking about it. She even said, she learned “she should always put her contact information on the inside of her suitcase, not just the outside.” It's a surprisingly good resource book.

There is a lot of information out there on living, self-help, what to do, life recommendations etc. However, not as comprehensive as List for Living. The book is an easy read, the tips are useful and do help enforce everyday living. If you read the book, you will certainly find yourself reading more pages that you anticipated, just cannot seem to put it down. I highly recommend Lists for Living to anyone and any age and at any point in your life. A+++

Please oh please make a kindle version

This book was eminently useful on my trip to Rome. It contained many of the important inscriptions as well as some I hadn't noticed before. A personal favorite being the monument to Honorius and Arcadia in the Forum which had Stilicho's name crossed out after he was executed. I would've totally missed that weathered marble block if the book hadn't pointed it out to me.

HOWEVER, this book is heavy, even in its paperback version. It definitely added to the weight, being lugged around in my backpack, and especially in this modern age, I could see this book being far more useful in an electronic version, or even its own App.

Otherwise, a solid book. Just one that needs to combine its old fashioned scholarship with new fangled technology.

EDIT: Looks like they took my advice and made a kindle version. HUZZAH.

a must-have for fans of Rome

This book is a must-have for fans of Rome. It will be of interest to scholars, tourists ... and to anyone interested in getting to know a new "layer" of the Eternal City. Lansford doesn't just translate Rome's Latin inscriptions; he puts them in historical context, bringing them to life. The organization of the guide into walking tours will turn even the most well-known neighborhood of Rome into an off-the-beaten track discovery.

A must have for ANY fan of Rome!!

My stepson was bragging to me about a Roman History class what a great and extremely knowledgeable Classics teacher he had at the University of Colorado, so I curiously asked to see the syllabus to the class. Immediately I read name Tyler Lansford on the top of the page and realized my stepson was taking a class from our "personal" guide, my stepson and I had just traveled to Rome the summer before and used Lansford well crafted book as a virtual tour guide of Rome and its timeless inscriptions by foot!! A must have for all ages of those who wish to understand the ancient city of Rome, and to those who wish to see hidden marvels in the city of Rome that they would otherwise be unaware of.

Between Two Worlds Introduction
More than ever, people are coming forward and sharing their experiences with after-death communication. Through television and film, the question of whether life exists beyond death has captivated our popular culture—not because it’s a new question, but because people are opening their minds to new answers. When I first got the call that my television show, Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, had been green-lighted, I promised to make it my purpose to explore whatever answers came my way and to share them honestly with the world. That’s the mission I’m still on, and my own questions multiply by the day. With all the different opinions about mediumship and psychic phenomena in circulation, I aim to provide unique, easy-to-understand explanations, obtained through my firsthand experiences.

I’m a firm believer that people should be able to decide for themselves what resonates with them. I’ll share what I’ve learned through communicating with the other side, and I encourage you to take from it what resonates with you. When it comes to the hereafter—things aren’t black or white. Taking into account the gray areas in between, I’ll explain some of the more consistent dynamics I’ve observed over the course of more than a thousand readings. There are many exceptions to the rules, but that’s the beauty of the other side. It’s far more complex and nuanced than anything we as humans can comprehend. There are some big questions to which I may never have the answers. However, every small answer helps contribute to our understanding of a much larger question: what happens when we die?

I speak to dead people. More interestingly, the dead speak back to me—primarily through sending mental impressions and sensations from the other side. All of what I do revolves around validation—that is, getting the confirmation from the sitter that the information I’m receiving is accurate and could only be known by the communicating spirit. Upon validation, my client gets the knowledge that their loved one’s soul continues on, is at peace, and is able to communicate anything that had been left unsaid or that was realized during the transitioning process.

If there’s anything I’ve learned through my work, it’s that in life, diversity is a gift. I know many different kinds of people will be drawn to this book, from all different backgrounds, belief systems, and degrees of familiarity with the subject matter. In the following pages, I’ll share with you my spiritual beliefs. However, I think it’s more important for you to understand the process of exactly what happens when a spirit comes through. For that reason, I’ll focus on the details of the experiences, so you can draw your own conclusions about how it all fits into the big picture of your beliefs. Individual differences aside, I think we can agree that we all benefit from the healing of others and the idea that love is eternal. The goal of my work, and the work of many other authentic mediums, is to reinforce these universal truths.

I understand that my ability is a gift and not something for which I can take any credit. I’m just a conduit for information to come through and reach those who are open to hearing it—something we all have a natural ability to do, to varying degrees. Practice breeds consistency, and the more we develop and trust in our gut feelings, the more significantly and accurately our intuition can help us. Even after doing countless readings, I still have to remind myself daily to “get out of my own way” and allow myself to be a clear vessel through which messages can flow.

When I first started learning about my abilities, I spent endless hours at bookstores and libraries, reading multiple books a day, and searching the Internet for resources and information about what made me so different. Being the only one experiencing an entirely other world was alienating in the truest sense. I felt like I had one foot in this world and one in the next. I didn’t understand, nor did I feel understood by, either side. As a kid, learning the ropes to our earthly dimension was challenging enough, let alone throwing another one into the mix. I was somewhere in between, a messenger in the middle of two realms: a medium.

Throughout my life, I’ve come to understand the world in two ways. In one sense, I’m like any other twenty-year-old adjusting to adulthood, learning to live on my own (and use a dishwasher for the first time, admittedly). Yet in a very different sense, the part of me that most people see is Tyler Henry the medium—the Macaulay Culkin look-alike who gets in touch with celebrities’ dead loved ones on television. Though most people can’t relate to what it’s like to get visual, sensorial, and mental impressions from people who’ve passed away, everyone is capable of understanding the impact those messages have on the loved ones who need it most. Whether it’s a reference to pink fuzzy dice from your aunt Edna, or an inside joke shared with a beloved grandmother, these are the messages I strive to deliver—no matter how random they may seem to me, personally.

When my clients come for a reading, I view my connecting process as a bit of a puzzle to solve. I receive impressions from one or more spirits, and together, the querent and I establish how the message is relevant and where it connects. Readings are 50 percent receiving the information and 50 percent untangling it. Throughout the past few years of doing sessions, I’ve seen countless forms of healing result from validating messages. Whether it’s closure from a loved one, much-needed proof of a hunch, or a release of guilt, I’ve been able to see what makes the most life-changing differences in each after-death communication. With each contact I make, I aim to bring a loved one through so clearly that it’s undoubtable to my client that I’m connecting. This validation comes from describing personality traits, quirks, family traditions, inside references, and sometimes even physical mannerisms. It’s the small, but specific, details that communicate the essence of who someone is in life, and the same can be true for those on the other side.

Every day brings new experiences and new stories shared by souls that are able to understand what truly mattered in their lives. Their messages teach us what we should value in our own. Above all, I’ve learned that transitioning to the other side gives perspective. Ironically enough, it’s the dead who have the most to teach us about life.

In this book, I hope to provide the reader with a narrative unlike any other—one that’s honest, down-to-earth, and uses terms everyone can understand. Besides answering some frequently asked questions, I want to delve into all areas of my human experience—as well as those of the individuals, living and dead, whose paths I’ve crossed.

Real hope for shy men to get dating for real.

This book is great. Not only is it very well written, I think it is one of the few books of it's kind in existence. Men are commonly left to initiate contact with women and make the first move in dating and relationships, but when you are shy this is far from easy. There are many books out there that give dating advice and tips on how to pick up women, but they are really not very useful to somebody who is extremely shy and nervous. There are many younger guys and older adult men who are so shy they find asking a woman out on a date isn't just difficult, it's so uncomfortable it can cause anxiety, not only ruining their chances to date the woman they are asking out, but also making them feel worse about themselves than they did before. The more bad experiences shy men have when trying to ask women out, the more discouraged they get, and this often makes them even more shy. This book targets shyness as one of the biggest obstacles preventing men from meeting and dating women. Rather than just telling the reader how they should act and dress and suggesting they go right out and try to ask women out, Chris starts first by attacking the problem of shyness directly with a well thought out step by step plan. The reader is told to start small and by following his guide, the reader hones simple skills that can't help but build confidence, calm nerves and erode shyness. Advice on how to act and what to say are useless if they don't attack the main problem of shyness. Each step the reader takes builds on the last until finally, he is no longer the same shy person he was when he first picked up the book.

The author says the book is semi-autobiographical, with advice borne out of real life experience, which adds credibility. Most of the scenarios in the book are ones that just about anybody can identify with no matter if you are shy or not, because it cites difficult real-life scenarios, e.g. such as how to interact with people at a party even if something embarrasing happened to you (like a drink being spilled on your shirt, etc.). This is a book that takes shyness more seriously than anything else I've read. Shy readers will feel they can relate. Even non-shy can benefit from this book. Lots of confident men may not suffer from shyness, but that doesn't mean their dating and relationships are satisfactory and fulfilling. Even these men could learn more than a thing or two from the social lessons in this book. Whoever you are grab a copy and dive in. You won't regret it.

Well-written and inspirational!

Really enjoyed this book. In an engaging, and direct writing style, Chris takes the reader through the steps necessary to significantly improve your social skills and dating success. What I like about the author's approach is that he breaks this process down into simple easy-to-follow steps. For someone who is struggling with an unsuccessful social/dating life, and in a mental rut about the whole thing, the situation can seem overwhelming. But, in fact, by taking simple - and easily accomplished - steps, the necessary changes are actually far less daunting than they may originally appear.

And that's the author's gift - to gently coax the reader into taking those steps, and convincing him that if he does, a better life is not only possible, but probable. It truly offers new (and realistic!) hope to those sitting on the social sidelines. Highly recommended. P.S. One final thing: as an author and publisher myself, I have to say, I really appreciated the production quality of this book - it's beautiful!

Great book for shy men

Many books that attempt help to improve male social skills with women do not take shy people into account. This is unfortunate as someone who is painfully shy will have a hard time implementing the strategies of those books. This author takes a different approach that I think is refreshing. While I am not "painfully shy" anymore I read the book to get some general tips on how to more social.

The book integrates topics and assignments on the belief that practice makes perfect (something I believe in). Some topics in the book include: Understanding shyness, positive vs. negative thoughts, working on your voice/body language, improving you look, improving your daily interactions, how to have a conversation in general, how to engage women, etc. Assignments progress upwards (e.g., from posting in online forums to actually talking to women). The book is an easy read and I think would add value to any shy man.

I think I should mention that it is my belief that you should walk before you run, so I think if someone is painfully shy they should buy other books on how to make general conversation/small talk first and then use this book to help increase their skills towards interacting with women. But as I previously stated, I think this is a great book. As a former shy person I can definitely say that the author understands what shy men go through and has some solid strategies to help them in the dating world.

About the Author
Howard Glasser, M.A. is founder of Children s Success Foundation and designer of The Nurtured Heart Approach. He and Jennifer Easley are the co-authors of Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach (1999), currently the to selling book on the topic of ADHD. He is also the co-author of The Inner Wealth Initiative: The Nurtured Heart Approach in Education (2007), currently the top selling book in the area of school interventions. He has been a featured guest on CNN and a consultant on 48 Hours and lectures in the U.S. and internationally, teaching therapists, educators, and parents about The Nurtured Heart Approach, which is now being used in hundreds of thousands of homes and classrooms around the world. Howard is former Director and Clinical Supervisor of the Center for the Difficult Child in Tucson. He has been a consultant for numerous psychiatric, judicial, and educational programs. Although he has done extensive doctoral work in the fields of Clinical Psychology and Educational Leadership, he feels his own years as a difficult child contributed the most to his understanding of the needs of challenging children and to the success of his approach. He lives in Tucson, Arizona. Joann Ridenour Bowdidge, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, is a licensed psychologist in Missouri, practicing currently at Neuropsychological Associates of Southwest Missouri. Her extensive experience with many types of disorders of adults and children has contributed to her insights in regard to the needs of difficult children and their parents. She lives in Springfield, Missouri. The Last Parenting Book You Will Need

I was one of those people who, as a teenager, I began reading parenting magazines and parenting books, long before I ever had children because I wanted to store away helpful techniques for later. After my children were born I continued to read and actually apply the things I thought would work. So, I have read a lot of parenting books - 1-2-3 Magic, Parenting the Strong willed child, Love and Logic, How to talk so your kids will listen.... Many of them have great insight but Transforming the Difficult Child is the last one I will ever read. It uses the Nurtured Heart Approach, which is so simple you might not think it will work, but it does. By simple I don't mean easy. It takes a lot of work and practice before you have it right. But the technique is not complicated.

I had the privilege of being guided by a clinical psychologist as I was learning this technique, which helped me to stick to it, and correct me when I failed to understand or when I started to do it the wrong way. If I hadn't had that guidance I may not have fully understood the concept, and probably would have done it wrong. It is not about praising your children or complimenting them or telling them they are amazing. Those techniques are becoming popular but really do our children a disservice because it often is something the child really has no control over. The point is to narrate to the child what they are doing (without wrapping it in a compliment), and, if needed, explain why that is a desired behavior. It uses rules, which are concrete and easy for children to understand and "resets" instead of time out. A reset gets the child's attention and gives him the ability to immediately change his behavior, whereas an arbitrary time-out does not accomplish this goal. Children want to be seen, and they want to know they are seen, and loved. You accomplish this by simply narrating what you see and refusing to engage when the behavior is negative. My son will come into the room and I will say, "I notice you have your red shoes on today." They might look at you like you are nuts but they feel good, they know they are seen.

It's way more powerful than I am making it sound here, but there is so much gold in this book. It works for any age and any behavior. I think there is a textbook on this approach as well but get the workbook instead because it tells you how to do it and lays the steps out for you making it easier to apply. Re-read it over again because you will keep learning from this book every time you do. I highly recommend this book!
