About the Author
Michael Oates of late was a professor of French at the University of Northern Iowa from 1967 to 2003. He received his Ph.D. in French from Georgetown University and was certified as an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Tester in French. In 1989, he won the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture. He is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques.

Larbi Oukada, a native of Casablanca, Morocco, is the chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Georgia College. Professor Oukada received a Ph.D. in linguistics from Louisiana State University. His research and publications have focused on French phonology, methods of teaching second languages, and the notion of curricular responsiveness. Professor Oukada coauthored with the late Mike Oates of Iowa a first-year French program entitled ENTRE AMIS, now in its sixth edition and adopted by over 350 colleges and universities. He is also the lead author of CONTROVERSES, now in its third edition.

Wonderful book to read with the SM child

I am a psychotherapist in residency for state licensure and am working with a child with severe/"entrenched" SM. I read this book with her and it seemed to really open her up to the idea that she is not alone and that there is a reasonable level of hope that her struggles with SM and social anxiety can be alleviated to a significant (though not necessarily absolute) degree. I believe this would be relatable to many SM children and their families as it does illustrate the primary and generally applicable SM symptoms that are manifested in most cases in some way. This is a simple yet delightful story that educates, entertains, and inspires the SM child, their family, and those who know them.

Highly recommend.

because Maya is so much like her. The only problem I seem to find ...

My daughter loves it, because Maya is so much like her. The only problem I seem to find over and over with books on selective mutism is that they are so school focused. We homeschool, so the fact that all books are not just based on a school setting, but exclusively talk about a school setting is a bit hard for us.

The perfect book for children with Selective Mutism, they can easily see themselves in this book. It gives them understanding that there are other kids out there just like them and it doesn't mean that they have to stay silent forever. If is also an excellent book for their child classmates, so they can better understand why they friend doesn't like to talk. My daughter is 3.5 and she absolutely loves Maya. She is about to get transitioned the an older group at school and we gave this book to the older group teacher, so she can prepare her kids for the new classmate. Highly recommended!

Our doctor also recommended the "The Very Quiet Cricket", but as for me I would not recommend it. It is a boring book, which has a lot of repetition and it is not clear to the child that the rubbing wing and not making a noise is the same thing as them not talking. If you don't explain it to the child, they may not get it.

I love this book! This subject/teaching has helped me break through the barrier that I had in my spiritual life. I now feel connected with God and am in communion with him daily. This is the greatest feeling in the world! For anyone who is having difficulty feeling spiritual, give this a read and/or check out his web site. There are many resources on there that will really help you. A fair warning though -- Andrew's not like any other minister. He gives it to you straight up, which is the way I prefer it. He's easy to understand and doesn't beat around the rose bush. May you find the peace that I have.

Help me come out of my 25 yrs of spiritual draught

This book help me to understand how my hardness in my heart kept me from receiving God blessing in my life through unbelief. This book was the first book introducing me to Andrew Wommark teachings that revolutionize my love for God and help me to come out of a 25yr drought in spirituality life and allowing Gods His unconditional love to penetrate the years of harding of my heart by peeling away each layer through His grace. I believe that Andrew Wommark teachings and through one of his books is one of the best bible teachers today and truly has a heart to encourage believers to become a disciple of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

New Light of Understanding of God's Word

Pastor Wommack has a vast understanding of God's Word and even though I have been involved in the Church for over 20 years, he has shown me new light for MY understanding. Now I manifest the promises of God I could only keep praying for in the past. In Hardness of Heart, Pastor Wommack shows from the Bible how even Jesus Christ's first disciples showed a hardness in heart, simply because they did not believe in Jesus's ability to save them from the storm after they had already seen the miracle of the five loaves and fishes. Pastor Wommack goes on to show more examples, his own examples so that we can relate. He then goes on to show us HOW to get up and out of a hard hearted attitude and mindset, for prosperous results.

Couched as a how-to guide for today's belt-tightening times, this book ostensibly celebrates the all-American resourcefulness that has turned used refrigerators into beer keg coolers and old bathtubs into lawn shrines. But practicalities aside, this is, of course, meant to be a satire, taking the idea of "making do with what you have" to ridiculous extremes. Thus readers get tips for turning old televisions into fish tanks, converting broken down pick-up trucks into backyard pools and using Kool-Aid as hair dye. All this is supposed to have readers laughing down their noses at redneck know-how. If only it were that funny. Though the authors obviously have an eye for tackiness, they fail to turn their material into the stuff of a successful mock handbook. There's no evident irony in their suggestions for how to rig your meter to rip off the power company or how not to pass a drug test, nor in their recipes for such trailer trash delicacies as "Velveeta Fudge" or "Tater-Tot Casserole." Like too much of the book, these recipes are only raw material, still waiting to be shaped into jokes. For all their condescension, filmmaker Elliott and English teacher Lowry have achieved the opposite of the "crackers" they ridicule: instead of making something out of nothing, they've made nothing out of something. Escape from the Everyday

Cracker Ingenuity provides an incredible escape from the Sex in the City everyday of $500 handbags and $12 cosmos. P.T. Elliott and E.M. Lowry remind us that we need not cry "super" every time our shower drains slowly, that in fact human ingenuity not only exists but would enrich our lives were we to exercise it instead of suppressing it in the money for labor market of the post-industrial city. As a return of the repressed, the authors demonstrate that there is something to be said for a house that rolls and for decorative lawn ornaments. Yes, in many places (like where I grew up) a person would be arrested for lawn ornaments, but that is exactly what the authors provide is a possible alternative everyday for the programmed life of pedicured French bulldogs and cars parked neatly in garages. P.T. Elliott follows up her 100 Proof with another humorous, enlightening winner.

I began Cracker Ingenuity with high expectations after reading and enjoying P. T. Elliot's last book, 100 Proof. I was not to be disappointed. Cracker Ingenuity is hysterical. The content is totally true blue redneck America with an eye for appreciation of this side of our culture rather than condescension. Many of the "ingenuities" had me actually laughing in my seat as I read and the illustrations seem to fit the authors' ideas perfectly. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a bit of insight into a part of the U.S. that, while somewhat rough around the edges, is likely in all of us.

elliot and lowry are important voices resounding in the name of american culture...they are not only able to reveal and share the hidden majesty of the people of this fine country...but are also able to do so with an originality and enthusiasm that is refreshing to read...fun and funny, often times laugh-outloud...this book allowed me access back to my own roots in tennessee...i could see myself in this book and i loved my reflection! thank you ladies!!

Catherine Chinyama has made a creditable attempt to bring order to the often confusing field of benign breast disease. She begins with an overview of diagnostic approaches -- radiologic, surgical, and pathological -- and then gives a detailed description of specific types of benign breast disease that are organized predominantly by pathological findings. The book concludes with a discussion of risk assessment for patients with the condition. The author addresses one of the major challenges in the field -- a lack of agreement among practitioners regarding terminology -- in a discussion of the various terms used for each benign breast condition, although terminology that is used in the United Kingdom predominates. The main focus of the book is on radiologic and pathological findings in benign breast disease and the implications of those findings as breast-cancer risks. Clinical issues are addressed in less detail and mainly to place the radiologic and pathological findings in context. The book is remarkably well illustrated, with more than 170 figures showing the results of mammography and ultrasonography and histologic images. The figures are informative and clarify points discussed in the text, and many of the images will serve as references for pathologists and radiologists as they interpret their findings. The range of benign breast disease covered in the book is broad, and the notable omission of infectious lesions and problems arising during pregnancy and breast-feeding reflects the fact that such conditions are not associated with the risk of breast cancer. The inclusion of recent advances in molecular pathology provides a biologic basis for discussions of the association of specific lesions with breast cancer and brings a 21st-century approach to the long-standing challenge of deciding which benign breast lesions are precancerous and which are not. Throughout the book, Chinyama reviews the often inconsistent findings in the literature regarding the breast-cancer risk associated with various benign breast lesions; she reports not only on the relative risks but also on the absolute risks during a defined period. For example, the relative risk of breast cancer in women with atypical ductal hyperplasia is reported to be 4.4 as compared with women without proliferative disease, whereas the absolute risk within 10 to 15 years is 10 percent. The influence of a patient's family history on these general risks is addressed. Despite this attention to detail, the chapter on risk assessment is the weakest one in the book. A more critical approach to studies of risk evaluation would have been useful, since it would have given more weight to the results of cohort studies instead of case-control studies. The book emphasizes the use of Wolfe mammographic patterns rather than tissue density as radiologic determinants of risk, although both methods are discussed. Furthermore, the results of the Women's Health Initiative (a randomized trial that showed a clear increase in breast-cancer risk among women receiving combined hormone-replacement therapy) are not included, despite a discussion of the methodologically weaker Million Women Study, which was published later. Offsetting these limitations is Table 12.1, a gem that provides a well-referenced summary of relative breast-cancer risks that are associated with various pathologically defined benign breast diseases. The book would have been strengthened by a discussion of common clinical presentations of benign breast disease -- for example, generalized lumpiness, dominant lumps, and both cyclical and noncyclical breast pain -- as well as a review of normal breast anatomy and development. Furthermore, Chinyama refers to the need for multidisciplinary meetings to address correlations between radiology and pathology in managing benign breast disease but does not make recommendations regarding the nature or format of such meetings or whether all benign breast lesions should be discussed. Nonetheless, this very useful book will interest any clinician, radiologist, or pathologist who deals with benign breast disease and its association with breast cancer. Some readers may disagree with the terminology and classification system used in some sections, but such a lack of consensus reflects the current reality, rather than any limitations in the writing. The book's detailed focus on specialized aspects of radiology and pathology makes it more useful for breast specialists than for general practitioners. Pamela J. Goodwin, M.D.

Great Artistic Resouce On Fanasty Painting Development

A really excellent resource for professionals who want an inside look at the creative process of these two fantasy masters. I'm not sure why some people were critical of this book in their reviews? If you have any background in painting and drawing you should be able to fill in the how-to blanks of a painting development without a complete step-by-step coloring book tutorial! This is not a how-to for the novice artist, but certainly anyone can learn from this book.

Awesome compilation of Vallejo & Bell's work

This is a truly cool anthology of the work of both of these really great artists. For those not familiar with their work, this is a fantastic chance to review most of their best work. For those already familiar, this is a chance to have that review at their finger tips.

Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell provide very realistic looking, and often sensual or partially nude, human forms typically set in a Fantasy or Futuristic setting. Many of these also contain realistic representations of God-like and Demonic creatures. But, it is V&B's ability to capture the human form for which they really stand out. Their artistic representation of the sensual human form is second to none and this book provides the best compilation of their work I have ever seen.

Anyone who is truly interested in Sensual Artistry should absolutely have a copy of this book.

I've followed Boris Vallejo's work (even got to meet him in person)since his humble beginnings! As a fellow artist, In my opinion, He is a Modern Master. I also had the chance to meet him with his wife Julie Bell though I don't think they were married at the time, Who's work also is extraordinary. I learned that if you want to be great learn how the great people do things then go make your own unique sandwitch!
