About the Author
K. C. Carceral is an inmate in prison serving a life sentence.

Thomas J. Bernard is professor of Crime, Law and Justice at Pennsylvania State University. His work has focused primarily on criminology and criminal justice theory and on juvenile justice.

Leanne Fiftal Alarid is an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas-El Paso. She double majored in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Northern Colorado. She worked in Denver as a counselor in a girls group home and then as a case manager at an adult halfway house before returning to school to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. She was on the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1996-2006, and at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2006-2013. Her research areas are post-conviction offender behavior, issues of mentally ill offenders, and correctional policy. She has also partnered with a number of criminal justice agencies as a researcher, consultant, and program evaluator. Dr. Alarid has authored more than fifty journal articles and book chapters. She has co-authored/edited seven other books and received the Fellow Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 2011 for her outstanding contribution to criminal justice education and service.

Bruce Bikle Ph.D. (Public Administration and Policy, Portland State University) comes to his current position at the California State University Sacramento after a career in law enforcement and corrections in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington. His interests include correctional policy, inmate programs, management of correctional programs and direct supervision jails.

Alene Bikle has a BA in journalism (University of Oregon, 1967). She has written for a variety of publications and has also coordinated public relations campaigns for local and statewide non-profit organizations. Her main interest lies in communicating "small" stories and tales about ordinary people to a broad audience, with the belief that by sharing and learning about others' lives, we find the links that lead to understanding and empathy.

Well worth doing the time to read

It doesn't seem like it would be easy to have an impact on society from behind prison walls, but, easy or not, that is what K. C. Carceral has achieved. "Behind a Convict's Eyes" is tangible proof that even a convicted felon may make an important and positive contribution.

Carceral (the name is a pseudonym meaning "belonging to a prison") is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence who has created a series of vivid word portraits of inmate life. These capture not only his own experiences, but the politics, economics, and culture of prisons as well.

The portraits done, Carceral follows with a scholarly effort that builds on an existing theory of "toxic shame identity" to suggest why people become criminals.

His own work is supplemented throughout by "discussions" from the four editors of the book.

Carceral says little about the crime that brought him to life in prison. Reading his book cannot help but make one wonder what he could have achieved had he not committed his crime -- or if his contribution to society would have been as great as the one contained in this slim volume.

A book that seems aimed less at the general public than at students and those who work for or deal directly with the criminal justice system, "Behind a Convict's Eyes" deserves a wider audience that it is likely to get.

About the Author
Roy has earned majors in speech, drama, and business and minors in U.S History from Weber College and California State University in LA. He is the cofounder of the Santa Maria Civic Theater where he wrote essays included in the programs for nine years. He has been in 36 live stage productions and worked with Tom Hanks and Robert DeNiro as a background actor. He taught law and business in high school and college and served in the Korean War. Many of these incredible stories of courage he personally witnessed and now wants to share them with the world. He lives with his wife Pat in California.

About the Author
James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.” Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Elana Gomel is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English and American Studies, Tel-Aviv University, Israel, which she chaired for two years. She is the author of three academic books and a number of articles, on topics ranging from science fiction to narrative theory; and from poetics of evolution to the Victorian novel.

This only contains the first chapter of this book. Nice short section on gesture drawing but there's nothing on completing the figure, drawing volumes, or any of the other stuff associated with figure drawing. Disappointed.

About the Author

Dave Jones

Dave Jones is a developer and teacher living in Spokane, Washington. He has worked with many of the top Fortune 500 companies during the last 30 years of his career.

Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Cal Poly, Pomona and has a Masters of Technology Management degree from Pepperdine University. He has always had a love for computers. He started his career by fixing Apple computers in the early 1980s. He continued on his career path by working at Rockwell Space Division where he had the opportunity to work on various Space Shuttle ground and control systems.

Dave continued his varied career by entering into the burgeoning Internet software industry, where he worked on developing white-label forum/bulletin board systems for many different startup companies. Some of these companies included Apple Computer, Microsoft, WebMD, Cisco, New York Times, UK Guardian, Dr. Phil and Oprah shows, Citicorp, Reader's Digest, Edmunds.com, Sony, Kodak, and many other fortune 500 companies. Throughout this interesting career, he was able to learn many of the technologies that are in use today and decided that he wanted to give back to the software community by teaching some of his life-long skills to new developers beginning their new careers.

Dave began teaching at a Spokane Community college in the Software Development department in 2008. He currently teaches many different technologies including Ruby, Ruby on Rails, PHP, Agile development, CSS/HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, mobile development with Java on the Android OS, as well as Objective-C on Apple iOS devices. He records his lectures and makes them publically available on YouTube where thousands of developers around the world are benefiting from his expertise. He is also the owner of a small software consulting company that helps pay for his teaching hobby.

The publisher only allowed me about 50 pages to cover a very broad subject and a very complex program. It wad not meant to be comprehensive. The book gives a good overview of the necessary functions used in everyday Ruby and Rails programming.

Ruby on Rails QuickStart to deploy

Not much else, if you are not doing Ruby on Rails. The information is quite basic. This is not a book which covers RubyMine comprehensively, nor does it explore advanced features, nor provide many expert tips and tricks, nor explore the philosophy of the full power of RubyMine.

Since I do not do rails, the book is a disappointment. If you do use Rails, I think it could work as a cheap (compared to training) QuickStart for basic and standard ruby-on-rails project creation, configuration, testing, and deployment --- in the form of basic recipes you follow.
