this book is excellent

I grew up in the '80's and '90's with my mom reading Keys for Kids to us daily. This book caputres all those old stories into one large book. The daily principles are priceless. I found my old Keys For Kids books from my childhood and have been reading them with my kids now daily. They are what I use for my personal adult devos too (I read it and the Bible passage myself first and meditate on it then read the same thing to my kids later in the day). I have to say, I have made very very few decisions I regret in my life, and it's because you keep your heart on track when you have a daily word from God and example of how to apply it. SO many days the lesson has been on a subject that I could apply that same day. Tell your kids to look for a way to apply it that day and to share with you when that happens!

Also, reguarding the commet someone made about one of the Keys being about child molesting:
It's extremeley important for kids to know what to do if they are being molested. Thank God for literature that helps us teach or children what to do and role play what to say if this is something they ever face. And most molesting does happen by a family member, close friend of the family, or an older child who has contact with your child... so the kids need to know what to do to protect themselves. You need to have this discussion with your kids for their own sake. You never know the strangers your kids will face at school, church, etc. Having a brief 3-4 sentence discussion a couple times a year about this (beginning of each school year is a good time, going to camp, sleepover at someone's house) could prevent tremendous heartache in your child's life. The subject is uncomfortable to talk about but necessary. The Golden Learn About Living Book entitled "You Can Say 'No' A Book About Protecting Yourself" by Betty Boegehold is an excellent book about this subject.

I bought this book used since it is the only way to get it. The original publication date is 1996. The book makes an excellent survival guide. It comes spiral bound between two plastic covers. The pages themselves seem to be printed on durable,water resistant paper. Each page tells you step by step how to evade/survive in a wilderness setting. The book is similar to the SAS survivor's guide. The content in this book is more detailed, but the diagrams are not as crisp and sharp. For the price I paid, I thought the book was a great deal. However, I don't think it is worth the $100+ price I've seen on the open market.

When we talk about character, writes Yale law professor Carter (The Culture of Disbelief), integrity "is in some sense prior to everything else"; thus his mix of anecdote and meditation is a worthy but quirky entree to an important yet hard-to-discuss subject. Integrity, he writes, is more than honesty?it requires actions and a willingness to spurn conformity. After his conceptual musings, Carter addresses the role of integrity in performance evaluations (he avoids routine hyperbole), in journalistic objectivity (he thinks the press should apply to itself the standards it applies to others), in law and in sports. Carter virtually ignores the broad question of integrity in business, but he does have interesting, if sometimes convoluted, thoughts on the role of integrity in marriage. He advises caution in legislating integrity in speech or in politics; his arguments spill over, somewhat overambitiously, into suggesting how integrity can help clean up politics ("We must listen to one another") and how the concept can help people face larger questions of evil. $50,000 ad/promo; author tour.

Integrity is defined in one standard dictionary as a "steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code." Carter (law, Yale) writes of integrity as first among the virtues that define good character. He defines integrity operationally as consisting of three traits: knowing the difference between what is right and wrong; acting on the knowledge of that difference; and an open and public commitment to acting on that difference. Carter writes of everyday experiences, of events in his own life, and of major public events, in which displays of integrity may or may not be apparent. These lead to discussions of the possibility of requiring that people always act with integrity and to the place of traditional visions of Christian integrity in public discourse. None of this seems particularly novel or too controversial. It also seems that much of this has been treated, perhaps in other forms, in Carter's earlier books, most notably in The Culture of Disbelief (LJ 9/1/93) and The Confirmation Mess (LJ 5/1/94). The message still seems to be that American society needs some form of radical reshaping. While his book doesn't really rise to the level of dramatic insight, Carter remains influential. In the footsteps of fellow virtuecrats such as William Bennett and Michael Lewis, another ringing defense of the obvious. Few will dispute Carter's (The Culture of Disbelief, 1993, etc.) passionate assertion that integrity is a good thing. He is also in favor of honesty, civility, and democracy (and by extension, Mom and apple pie). Integrity, in his conception of it, is a kind of ber-virtue, for it involves, ``discerning what is right and what is wrong [and] acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost.'' To make sure everyone knows that you have integrity, you should also announce ``that you are acting on your understanding of right from wrong.'' Carter is aware of all the traditional problems with integrity (doesn't a fanatical Nazi have integrity?), and in his legalistic way, the Yale law professor enunciates a series of carefully couched codicils designed to close off such immoral loopholes. But as is the case with many legal arguments, these are not so much convincing as they are clever. Carter's understanding of integrity is also both too wide and too shallow. Trying to fluff his simple thesis to book length, he covers in excessive detail such trivialities as sportsmanship and college recommendations. He is also, for a moralist, startlingly parochial. His eight-principle program for improving democracy (apart from ranging far beyond integrity) has limited application. Most of his examples are narrowly American-focused, and some are so current as to be meaningless. His thoughts on American involvement in Bosnia, for example, are already out of date. While he gives obeisance to Aristotle and Locke, he also avoids much of the major philosophical work on integrity. Great beginning discussion

If you have ever thought about integrity (who has not?) and are looking for a comprehensive study or analysis on what this often-used and often-misunderstood character trait means traditionally and in today's society, then this book is a great place to start.

Carter defines integrity with three required steps. Step 1 is the act of discerning what is right and what is wrong; your personal views are well thought out in advance. Step 2 is acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost. He cautions that doing what is right will often be painful. Step 3 is saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right from wrong. Carter repeatedly makes the point that the test of integrity comes only when doing the right entails a significant cost.

Carter analyzes actual and hypothetical examples using his three-step definition. His examples include journalists, marriage vows, political candidates, competitive sportsmanship, and college professors' letters of reference, and more.

Carter's scholarly and lawyerly-logic efforts were certainly not light-reading, but he did well in making a potentially dry subject interesting and informative. While his frequent and almost excessive direct references to his Catholic beliefs and his admiration of the American Civil Rights movement led by Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. might make some readers uncomfortable, I thought they were effective and appropriate to his discussions. Towards the end of the book, Carter even proposes a set of eight principles for bringing true integrity to our politics and democracy that will certainly generate both positive and negative critiques.

Overall, I admire Carter's courage in tackling such a difficult subject (everybody thinks they know what it is, but very few seem to agree on it) and being the first to put it out front for all to see. An introspective and thought-provoking book that was well worth the effort it took to read and absorb.

While some might fault Mr. Carter for missing some of the deeper philosophical ambiguities of the integrity and ethics questions, at the same time, he also misses a large segment of elitist abstract and obstruse arguments that make no impression on the normal people who are the American democracy. Mr. Carter does the nation a great service by stating the obvious (which if it was really obvious, wouldn't need stating in book length) in language that is sufficient but not difficult and using examples, that, while some might decry the close historical distance, are examples of things that are still close enough to be common knowledge, and thus, readily understandable without long explanation.

Great ending!!!

This was a great series and I loved how it ended. The characters have grown so much and have to learn to live with the terrible things and evil soul in the series has caused to happen to all of them. Ana looses some of her new friends and it is very sad to see them go. She and Chance have a lot of sacrifice and pain to go through before this book ends. I loved how things worked out though and I cried in some places. It was and lovely surprise ending and I loved the epilogue that was a few years in the future so you got to see how things went after all this madness was over. Loved it! A great read and a great ending to the series.

Excellent series!!

After reading the first book in this series, I purchased the last three! I loved the characters and the journeys they made over the years. I really enjoyed a storyline that wasn't sexual in nature. Seems like that is the "norm" in writing today, so I'm glad that Ms. Brown saw fit to make the story interesting and exciting, and my only negative comment is that there won't be a #5!! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys shape shifter fiction!

This a continuation of the Shapeshifter Chronicles, It has kept my interest through all the books in this series. I received the first book for free, I liked it so much that I have purchased the next 3 books. They are YA books but I am 73 and not considered to be a young adult. LOL These are a good clean read Anyone would enjoy them.
