About the Author

Greg Perry is a speaker and writer in both the programming and applications sides of computing. He is known for bringing programming topics down to the beginner’s level. Perry has been a programmer and trainer for two decades. He received his first degree in computer science and then earned a Master’s degree in corporate finance. Besides writing, he consults and lectures across the country, including at the acclaimed Software Development programming conferences. Perry is the author of more than 75 other computer books. In his spare time, he gives lectures on traveling in Italy, his second favorite place to be.

Dean Miller is a writer and editor with more than 20 years of experience in both the publishing and licensed consumer product businesses. Great Book!!!

I would like to thank the author for doing such a good job with this book. He explains programming concepts clearly and gives example programs to hammer these concepts home. There are 32 chapters and they are short which I really like. There have been some books that ramble for 30+ pages before even a line of code. Not this book, a couple pages at most and then to coding. Programming is very difficult for me and always has been. This book has helped me a great deal. I actually wrote a couple simple programs. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have dabbled with VB, C# and JavaScript. I should have started with C. C is like the parent of the others and the "genetic code" has been passed down to the other languages. If you are a Newbie, start here if you are looking for a simple but full understanding. Good luck!!! Anyone have recommendations as to what the next C book should be? I am very interested in data acquisition and graphing live data.

Good book but Kindle version is horrible

This is a good book for someone looking to learn C from the scratch but the Kindle version of the book is a disappointment and should be avoided. Buy printed book instead. I own the Kindle version and in it to view the code you have to click on the "click here to view code image" link on a lot of pages which takes you to the code. On Kindle for PC one can go back to original reading position by pressing back button after viewing the code but on Kindle for iPad, I couldn't find a way to go back after viewing the code. That resulted in wastage of a lot of time.

Also the kindle version is full of sentences like the following:

"If the or is a prefix, C computes it before anything else on the line. If the or is a postfix, C computes it after everything else on the line finishes. Because the in the preceding code is a prefix."

This sentence has some text missing from it and some of such sentences are not accompanied by "click here to view code image" option and hence such sentences don't make any sense. Looks like no one even bothered to proof-read the Kindle version of this book. Such issues have turned a book deserving 5-star review into one with a 2-star review.

From now onwards I'll think twice before buying a coding book on Kindle.

Clearly written

This is a clearly written introduction to C for people who haven't coded before. If you're a newbie to coding and mention of pointers has you breaking out in a cold sweat, then I'd recommend this book. If you're looking for something a bit more sophisticated, something that covers things like pointers to functions and linked lists, look elsewhere -- my favorites are Kochan's "Programming in C" and Horton's "Beginning C."

Good Book, but expect to bring other references during the exam.

I just took the last PE exam and found this book to be helpful. You'll really need to buckle down and read through it though. If you want to pass, I suggest bringing a minimum of three reference books. This book, Hiner's book and the ASCE 7-05. I brought the IBC but didn't have to use it. This book along with Hinder's had most of the references that I needed. Some questions required the ASCE 7-05. I didn't have the ASCE 7-05 :(

In any case I was able to pass by studying through this WHOLE book and Hiner's WHOLE book. I didn't take any classes.

Lists for Living...is so much fun and actually has real advice for your life.

This book was given to me as a gift from my sister. If Oprah Winfrey had her book list from the Oprah Show, I think Myrna Ossin would be a guest on that show. She clearly has a vast wealth of knowledge of lists for your life. Everyone can use this book and learn from it. It is not only an archive of to-do’s lists, it is like having access to a brain of someone who thinks of everything. It was just fun to read cover to cover. I gave Lists for Living as a gift to my mother-in-law and she couldn’t stop talking about it. She even said, she learned “she should always put her contact information on the inside of her suitcase, not just the outside.” It's a surprisingly good resource book.

There is a lot of information out there on living, self-help, what to do, life recommendations etc. However, not as comprehensive as List for Living. The book is an easy read, the tips are useful and do help enforce everyday living. If you read the book, you will certainly find yourself reading more pages that you anticipated, just cannot seem to put it down. I highly recommend Lists for Living to anyone and any age and at any point in your life. A+++

Please oh please make a kindle version

This book was eminently useful on my trip to Rome. It contained many of the important inscriptions as well as some I hadn't noticed before. A personal favorite being the monument to Honorius and Arcadia in the Forum which had Stilicho's name crossed out after he was executed. I would've totally missed that weathered marble block if the book hadn't pointed it out to me.

HOWEVER, this book is heavy, even in its paperback version. It definitely added to the weight, being lugged around in my backpack, and especially in this modern age, I could see this book being far more useful in an electronic version, or even its own App.

Otherwise, a solid book. Just one that needs to combine its old fashioned scholarship with new fangled technology.

EDIT: Looks like they took my advice and made a kindle version. HUZZAH.

a must-have for fans of Rome

This book is a must-have for fans of Rome. It will be of interest to scholars, tourists ... and to anyone interested in getting to know a new "layer" of the Eternal City. Lansford doesn't just translate Rome's Latin inscriptions; he puts them in historical context, bringing them to life. The organization of the guide into walking tours will turn even the most well-known neighborhood of Rome into an off-the-beaten track discovery.

A must have for ANY fan of Rome!!

My stepson was bragging to me about a Roman History class what a great and extremely knowledgeable Classics teacher he had at the University of Colorado, so I curiously asked to see the syllabus to the class. Immediately I read name Tyler Lansford on the top of the page and realized my stepson was taking a class from our "personal" guide, my stepson and I had just traveled to Rome the summer before and used Lansford well crafted book as a virtual tour guide of Rome and its timeless inscriptions by foot!! A must have for all ages of those who wish to understand the ancient city of Rome, and to those who wish to see hidden marvels in the city of Rome that they would otherwise be unaware of.
