For any code book to be good, there should NOT be any minor mistakes such ...

On a high level, this book is decent. However, the quality of the book should be downgraded since the amount of typos/code grammar mistake is surprisingly high. It also uses out-dated library such as Jackson 1. The Spring 4.1.0+ does not support Jackson 1 anymore. Hence, I have to debug and search on Google since the compiled code won't fking run on the Tomcat server. I have to actually switch to Jackson 2 manually which costs me 1 hour to decide not following the exact steps told by the book.

For any code book to be good, there should NOT be any minor mistakes such as these. Especially you expect your reader to FOLLOW EXACTLY what you do. I almost decided to quit reading the book because of the small mistakes/errors made by this book.

Fantastic Spring Framework 4 Book

FANTASTIC!!!, finally a book on the Spring framework that it able to clearly explain every piece you need to know. I have five (5) books on the Spring framework that I have purchased in the last couple of months, and this is the only one that has not left me hanging and wondering where I went wrong or what I missed.

I was a Java developer for twelve (12) years, but for the last seven (7) years I have been an IT Manager and have not coded a single thing. I was beginning to think I was just to far out of the game to understand everything that has changed.

Amuthan G. writes in a manner that is very easy to understand and I love the way he has structured the content. The "Time for action..." sections where you actually write the code being explained is followed by the invaluable "What just happened?" explanation of every step in the process. He also includes "Pop quiz" sections where you can see how well you have picked up the concepts explained. There are also "Have a go hero..." sections where Amuthan G. gives you some items to add to the code, but does not give you exactly what to write. This way you truly get an idea for how well you understand the material.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who needs to clearly understand the Spring framework at it's core.

A Reference and Introduction to Spring MVC

Spring MVC Beginner's Guide is a thorough introduction and reference on Spring MVC. Although it has "Beginner's" in the title, I would advise anyone reading this book to have some familiarity with the basics of the Spring Framework and of JSP/servlet programming before reading it. Readers of this book do not need to have significant expertise in these areas, but would benefit from having a cursory understanding of what they do and how they work. The "Beginners" in this title seems to me to apply to people beginning to work specifically with Spring MVC rather than people completely new to servlets/JSPs and even the more general Spring Framework.

The examples in MVC Beginner's Guide are detailed in terms of code and descriptive text. The code is often presented first, with explanatory text following. I found that I often skimmed the code examples first, read the explanatory text, and then looked back at the code as I read the explanations or after finishing reading the explanations.

MVC Beginner's Guide assumes at least JDK 7 (though the author states in one place that JDK 6 would probably work) for the examples. The examples also assume use of Maven to build the examples and the use of Eclipse-based Spring Tool Suite to work with the code and for execution of some of the examples. There is an appendix at the end of the book that discusses how to use Gradle to build the examples instead of using Maven.

Code examples in MVC Beginner's Guide are well-formatted and readable, but they do not have color coded syntax and there are no line numbers. Several screen snapshots help illustrate the author's points and are especially helpful for readers following along with the examples and using the recommended tools.

A classic text . . .

. . . and one you should probably acquire for your law library at some point; its explanations are clear and lucid, and it's probably the single most-cited work on torts apart from the Restatement (Second). However, if you're a One-L looking for a study aid, there are a couple of things you should be aware of.

First of all, the most recent edition of this text dates from 1984. That means quite a bit of it is at least slightly out of date, and some of it is massively so (particularly in the field of products liability). For a more up-to-date hornbook, consider Dobbs. (I bought and used both.)

Second, when your torts professor talks about "black-letter law," s/he's not talking about this hornbook or any other; s/he's usually talking about the Restatement (Second) of Torts (or, in products liability, the Restatement (Third)). As much as I like hornbooks (and I am emphatically not a fan of the "casebook" approach), I have to say that if you want to get _one_ text to supplement your casebook, you should pick up _A Concise Restatement of Torts_ from the American Law Institute. And, ideally, you should memorize large portions of it.

Of course, you can do what I did: buy all three. It's a great investment, and it will pay off in your studies; Prosser and Keeton provide much helpful discussion of points that Dobbs treats more briefly, and the Concise Restatement is much easier to understand once you've digested the hornbook(s).

At any rate, this _is_ a classic text and you shouldn't go without it for any longer than necessary. Just be aware of what you're buying and set your priorities accordingly.

P&K is a classic

I used P&K to supplement my casebook and class notes, and it guided me to an A- in torts. It's a great tool and a great read. However, it does have certain limitations: the final edition was published in the late 80s, so it does not provide much guidance on product liability, infliction of emotional distress and other emerging areas of tort law.
P&K gives you something that year 1 of law school sorely lacks: a context for the fragments in your case book. Its treatment of Palsgraf is particularly beautiful.
And since Prosser so strongly influenced tort law, you can be confident that you are getting good information. Some of my classmates used commercial outlines and they often worried about whether they could trust the material. No such problems with P&K; it was on the money all the time. And when there was a contradiction between P&K and my textbook, I was able to go to my professor and ask her about it. Try doing that with a commercial outline.
P&K is not merely fine reference tool; it is a genuine work of literature. I love it, and I highly recommend it.

This is the one that got me through Torts in law school.

This is THE classic hornbook for torts, and is an indispensable part of any law student's library. I still find myself referring to this one from time to time. When I was in law school the lucid and clear explanations of law, combined with copious footnoted citations, made this book a joy to own and read.

There are a lot of general torts texts, but after eight years of practice, this one still ranks near the top.

I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.

No, it's not as in depth as many, but it IS easy to read, and the major points are well covered.

Whether novice or experienced practitioner, this book has much to offer.

"Trust" - Relevant and Informative

Les Csorba's book, "Trust: The One Thing that Makes or Breaks a Leader," provides instructive guidance in analyzing the business, political and civic challenges that leaders face today and in the future.

Many of the illustrations in the book come directly from Csorba's own experiences or through interviews with well-known leaders. With the backdrop of the Enron trials and an upcoming Presidential election, the issue of trust becomes highly relevant.

Csorba uses insights that he has gained in the business world, and in working at the White House, to analyze what leaders need to be successful. He combines historical stories with his real-life experiences to weave together a comprehensive explanation on why trust can make or break a leader.

One aspect that is not often seen in current business books is including the spiritual perspective. The Saturday or Sunday spiritual lessons are many times forgotten or ignored by Monday morning. When addressing a character/moral issue like "trust," one cannot forget the spiritual guidance and Biblical lessons that are the bases for character/moral issues.

Blends experience, business school theory, & practical steps

If you care about becoming a better leader in your work or civic organizations or in your home, this is a practical book. The author helped me understand not only cutting edge business school thinking about leadership but also gave me concrete practical insights. The illustrations are dynamite. For example, the author gives behind the scenes accounts of working in the White House that are riveting. Also, he did a beautiful job of using the movie Emperor's Club to make his point about the importance of moral leadership over merely practical leadership.

What hooked me was the blend of the author's career experience in leadership, explaining the work of leadership gurus Jim Collins and Warren Bennis, and vivid stories. He takes his insights and applies to them to leadership in politics, corporate America, and other areas of life. This is a fascinating, fast paced and very helpful read. I recommend it.

Trust: The One Thing That Makes or Breaks a Leader is a great book. I found it very helpful and insightful for learning how to be a better leader in my work and family. It also highlights the tremendous need we have to raise up a new generation of leaders in these areas as well. Trust is also very relevant as we draw closer to the 2004 Elections.

He is editor-in-chief of Criminal Law Forum, and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Technical Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights.

Ignore Bush, Read This Book

Schabas succeeds fully in introducing the reader to the main features of the new International Criminal Court (ICC). His book is a model of legal exposition. He writes clearly, situates the ICC within the history of international law, relates the substantive law of the ICC to the jurisprudence of the Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals, and has interesting comments on the negotiating history that led to the ICC. After finishing Schabas' book, I was struck most of all by the care and thought that went into the design of the ICC, which conforms to the main lines of international law as the law has developed since 1945. The ICC is the world's best hope for bringing war criminals, human rights violators, and genocidalists to justice. It is a disgrace that the U.S. has tried to smother it in the cradle. (I am a U.S. State Department official.)

Very helpful

For this reviewer, who is definitely not a legal expert, this book was read with the goal of understanding to what extent pre-emptive wars can be viewed as `legal', to discover the reasons why the United States chose to withdraw its participation in the International Criminal Court, and to gain basic knowledge on the tenets and origins of international law in order to find out if indeed the current conflict in Iraq could be viewed as a `war crime' or some other severe violation of international law. Before reading this book, this reviewer was very unknowledgeable about legal concepts and reasoning in the context of international law, and had the opinion that international legal agreements were very fragile and tenuous. This view did not really change after reading the book, but its perusal did offer a few surprises and was thought provoking to a large degree. Like most legal treatises, this book suffers from the typical `tyranny of the footnote' that accompanies legal or history books. This minor annoyance that causes the flow of the reading to be disrupted is perhaps compensated by the need for the reader to know that the sources are available and that they can be checked if necessary.

Readers who are not legal experts will no doubt think of the Nuremberg trials as being the best representative of what an international court can accomplish given the jurisdiction. Their biases in this regard are in fact true as is brought out many times in the book, particularly in the discussion on genocide and `crimes against humanity', which the Nuremberg trails were set up to deal with after the second world war. The word `genocide' apparently originated with Raphael Lewkin in 1944. Lewkin wanted to make sure that crimes against groups were prosecuted. It was later adopted in 1946 by the Nuremberg prosecutors and declared an `international crime' by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Genocide was to be distinguished from `crimes against humanity' since the latter was only to hold in the context of an international armed conflict. The author argues that the distinction is not really significant today, with `crimes against humanity' now referring to atrocities committed in wartime and in peacetime. However, genocide is to be distinguished from `crimes against humanity' and `war crimes' in that it must be committed with the `intent' of destroying a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. It is this `special intent' the author argues, that makes genocide different from the other two crimes.

According to the author, the designation of an activity as a `war crime' began with the 1907 Hague Convention IV and was refined in the 1919 Commission on Responsibilities. From then on says the author, "there is little argument about the existence of war crimes under international law." The Nuremberg charter listed as a war crime the murder or ill treatment of prisoners of war, the killing of hostages, the wanton destruction of cities, villages, or towns, and devastation not justified by military necessity, among other activities. In reference to this, it would seem that the war in Iraq should be labeled as a war crime given that some of the activities to date in this war do satisfy these criteria. In addition, the fire bombing of Tokyo and Dresden, and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could be classified as war crimes according to the Nuremberg charter.

Of all the characteristics of the International Criminal Court, its jurisdiction is the most problematic. Its creators were very ambitious in their goals, for it was to have the most general scope and application of any international body to date. The author emphasizes that its creation rests on the voluntary participation of countries that decide to be subject to its jurisdiction. The ICC though has a narrower jurisdiction than the individual countries that participate in it. The drafters were careful to grant the individual countries the first crack at the prosecution of certain crimes. If the domestic justice system is `unwilling' or `unable' to prosecute then the ICC can take over. The author refers to this as `admissibility' in the book, which is to be distinguished from jurisdiction. Jurisdiction refers to the `situation' in which a crime has been committed, whereas `admissibility' refers to the proper identification of a `case' that can be taken up by the ICC. The jurisdiction of the ICC though can be prevented by the UN Security Council, this being called `deferral' by the author, and was put in so that the ICC would not be able to act effectively as no veto on issues brought to the Security Council.

When reading the book one is struck by the extreme fragility of international law and the difficulties needed to enforce it. The author describes the statutes of the Nuremberg, Tokyo, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda tribunals as being "very thin" when viewed in the context of criminal law. These tribunals allowed the judges much discretion, but the ICC under the Rome statute attempted to limit judicial discretion to a very large degree. The ICC was to draw on many sources of legal doctrine in order to define the general principles upon which it was to operate. As examples, the author quotes Romano-Germanic and Sharia forms of penal justice, reflecting of course the international character of the ICC, and the diversity of the states that elect to be under its jurisdiction.

In the opinion of this reviewer, the best feature of the International Criminal Court is its insistence on trying and punishing individuals, and not states, or other "abstract entities" like corporations (although corporate liability was debated considerably by the delegates according to the author). Commanders who order their subordinates to carry out war crimes or do not act to prevent them are particularly culpable. Without such an international legal body, disputes or grievances between states will be settled by the use of military power. The victor will have no one to answer to, regardless of the heinous acts it committed to win.

Third edition much more detailed than the first

I have the first edition of this book (2001) and I would like to point out that the bulk of it consists of three appendices: the Rome Statute, Elements of Crimes and Rules of Procedure and Evidence. These three documents are public information and make up over half the book (218 pp.). The original content of the book is only 164 pp. which would be a much smaller book on its own. Of course the content is of good quality. Looking at the table of contents of the third edition, it seems the original content has really expanded with the development of the court. So make sure you get the edition that you order on amazon!
