A Lucky Find

Anyone who adores Disney animation will cherish a book like this one written by two of the "Nine Old Men", Ollie Johnston, and Frank Thomas. It contains page after page of illustrations but more importantly, a fully in depth explanation of how animation evolved over time. It's an exceptional book in all regards, and will take some time to actually read but; who's complaining about that? While the word "inbetweens" may have a simplistic meaning to you or to me, the authors go into depth, with matching illustrations, to show exactly how this function works within the studio. Animators do the first and last artwork of each movement (let's say of Mickey Mouse jumping) and then it is up to the inbetweener to make this action become "live." Sound simple? Not very, as it turns out. The version I have is a second printing: 1984 and in reasonably good shape. As a consummate Disney enthusiast, this is a lucky find indeed.

No logical flow and too dense

This book is supposed to be a primer, an introduction to the pharma industry but it is too dense. Each of the chapters are written by different people who are experts in their field. But the end result is that the book does not have any flow and some of the earlier chapters go into way too much detail for anybody to comprehend or even care.

About the Author
Hans Gerth is Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin.

Charles Wright Mills (August 28, 1916, Waco, Texas – March 20, 1962, West Nyack, New York) was an American sociologist. Mills is best remembered for his 1959 book The Sociological Imagination in which he lays out a view of the proper relationship between biography and history, theory and method in sociological scholarship. He is also known for studying the structures of power and class in the U.S. in his book The Power Elite. Mills was concerned with the responsibilities of intellectuals in post-World War II society, and advocated public, political engagement over disinterested observation.

Mills initially attended Texas A&M University but left after his first year and subsequently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1939 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1941. After a stint at the University of Maryland, College Park, he took a faculty position at Columbia University in 1946, which he kept, despite controversy, until his untimely death by heart attack. In the mid-1940s, together with Paul Goodman, he contributed to Politics, the journal edited during the 1940s by Dwight Macdonald.

Excellent as both an adventure story and a piece of descriptive writing

Hammond Innes' golden era is generally considered to be his books from the late 1940's to the early 1970's. 'The Land God Gave To Cain' was written right in the middle of this outstanding run, and showcases clearly why he was such a good writer. Although firmly in the adventure/thriller mould, Innes' works were always more like "proper" novels, especially in their well-drawn characterisation, and their realistic and detailed descriptions of unusual environments. This book is a fantastic example of "classic Innes", working well on three levels; an intriguing adventure mystery, a powerful character drama, and an extraordinary piece of descriptive writing about the harsh environment of the Labrador.

The book opens with the death of Ian Ferguson's father, a man who was physically and mentally disabled during the war, and lived for nothing but his amateur "ham" radio. On receiving an SOS from a Canadian expedition, Ferguson Senior desperately struggled to his feet and cried out for the first time in years, and the effort killed him. But there are several bizarre implications of this message; firstly, that nobody else in the world received it, and secondly, that the lone survivor of the expedition has already reported the remaining men dead. How can a dead man send a radio message, and how could a radio signal travel to England but remain unheard only a hundred miles away? And why would a survivor abandon his mates and report them dead if they were obviously alive? Ian's determination to prove his father right sees him travel to the Labrador Railway, where he battles unsympathetic authorities and the harsh environment to follow in the footsteps of the expedition and uncover the truth.

Innes does a great job in bringing to life the bleak, frozen wasteland of the Labrador, as well as those who inhabit it. We follow Ian "up the line" from the relatively civilised Seven Islands to the frontier virgin wilderness near the Lake Of Lion, with each location being more remote and hostile than its predecessor. But it is not only the intense cold and remoteness that Innes focusses on, he gives the Labrador depth by exploring its spiritual significance and almost mystical beauty.

But what really makes this story are the characters. Ian Ferguson is once again the "everyman" protagonist who gets drawn into an extraordinary situation through a combination of luck and stubbornness. Darcy, who has spent years in the Labrador and is the only person on the line who believes Ian, combines tough resourcefulness with a reverent respect for the country and its people. But the two standout characters are Bert Laroche and especially Paule Briffe. Laroche is the lone survivor whom Ian believes left the other members to die, or possibly even murdered. And Paule is perhaps the most tragic character of all; daughter of the expedition leader and fiancée of Laroche, she is torn between hoping her father is alive and hoping her fiancée's is not a killer.

The dramatic tension in the book builds as Innes assembles all these characters, then traps them together in an environment from which there is no escape. Laroche is clearly hiding something, and his attempts to prevent Ian from finding the Lake of Lion become increasingly desperate, while Paule's doubts begin to grow. The combination of mystery and drama result in an incredibly powerful and poignant climax, in particular the confrontation between Paule and Laroche, and the final discovery of what really happened to the members of the expedition.

In all, this is just a great book, that works well as an adventure novel and as a piece of descriptive writing. If you're new to Hammond Innes and want to get a handle on his quite unique style, this is as good as place as any to start. And for long-time fans, this is definitely one of his best and most well-written books.

This book is so good, I can't put it down. The journey the main character goes on , throughout the book keeps me glued to the book for hours. I have read this book over and over again, and still am supprised at things that happen , as if I were reading the book for the first time. I can actually feel the cold of Labrador and the emotions of the people involved in the novel.

VERY disappointed.

The first ten hours were mind-numbingly slow. I kept hoping it'll speed up. No. Didn't even describe the landscape of Labrador except "cold, empty"... The first few chapters were full of description of nothing over and over again in the radio log books. Not engaging. Did not develop in reader any empathy for main or other characters. VERY disappointed.

What it lacks in depth, it more than makes up for in typos.

Would not recommend this product for use in preparing for the CCRN exam. One major flaw is the book is full of typos. Almost every section of the book has grammatical and textual errors, as if it was not proofwritten at all. Really distracted by the sheer amount of typos, especially in preparing for an an exam that has a bearing on peoples' careers. Also disappointed by the lack of depth this book offered. It seemed to be a very cursory review and there are definitely other materials out there that will provide better review.

Terrible. Not enough content to prepare you for CCRN ...

Terrible. Not enough content to prepare you for CCRN exam. Found mistakes and misinformation in the print that I am shocked made it past editing! This book would be great for a nursing student in an ADN program as review for anatomy and physiology, not for an experienced critical care nurse to take the CCRN exam. The practice tests in the back of the book also have the answers right below the questions making it hard to take without seeing the answers. The overall reviews for this book are misleading, I strongly advise purchasing a different prep book for CCRN certification.

Poor quality.

This book was dumbed down way too much for a critical care nurse. It would never prepare you to pass the ccrn exam. Many mistakes and errors were found in the practice exam.

About the Author
K. C. Carceral is an inmate in prison serving a life sentence.

Thomas J. Bernard is professor of Crime, Law and Justice at Pennsylvania State University. His work has focused primarily on criminology and criminal justice theory and on juvenile justice.

Leanne Fiftal Alarid is an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas-El Paso. She double majored in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Northern Colorado. She worked in Denver as a counselor in a girls group home and then as a case manager at an adult halfway house before returning to school to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. She was on the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1996-2006, and at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2006-2013. Her research areas are post-conviction offender behavior, issues of mentally ill offenders, and correctional policy. She has also partnered with a number of criminal justice agencies as a researcher, consultant, and program evaluator. Dr. Alarid has authored more than fifty journal articles and book chapters. She has co-authored/edited seven other books and received the Fellow Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 2011 for her outstanding contribution to criminal justice education and service.

Bruce Bikle Ph.D. (Public Administration and Policy, Portland State University) comes to his current position at the California State University Sacramento after a career in law enforcement and corrections in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington. His interests include correctional policy, inmate programs, management of correctional programs and direct supervision jails.

Alene Bikle has a BA in journalism (University of Oregon, 1967). She has written for a variety of publications and has also coordinated public relations campaigns for local and statewide non-profit organizations. Her main interest lies in communicating "small" stories and tales about ordinary people to a broad audience, with the belief that by sharing and learning about others' lives, we find the links that lead to understanding and empathy.

Well worth doing the time to read

It doesn't seem like it would be easy to have an impact on society from behind prison walls, but, easy or not, that is what K. C. Carceral has achieved. "Behind a Convict's Eyes" is tangible proof that even a convicted felon may make an important and positive contribution.

Carceral (the name is a pseudonym meaning "belonging to a prison") is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence who has created a series of vivid word portraits of inmate life. These capture not only his own experiences, but the politics, economics, and culture of prisons as well.

The portraits done, Carceral follows with a scholarly effort that builds on an existing theory of "toxic shame identity" to suggest why people become criminals.

His own work is supplemented throughout by "discussions" from the four editors of the book.

Carceral says little about the crime that brought him to life in prison. Reading his book cannot help but make one wonder what he could have achieved had he not committed his crime -- or if his contribution to society would have been as great as the one contained in this slim volume.

A book that seems aimed less at the general public than at students and those who work for or deal directly with the criminal justice system, "Behind a Convict's Eyes" deserves a wider audience that it is likely to get.

About the Author
Roy has earned majors in speech, drama, and business and minors in U.S History from Weber College and California State University in LA. He is the cofounder of the Santa Maria Civic Theater where he wrote essays included in the programs for nine years. He has been in 36 live stage productions and worked with Tom Hanks and Robert DeNiro as a background actor. He taught law and business in high school and college and served in the Korean War. Many of these incredible stories of courage he personally witnessed and now wants to share them with the world. He lives with his wife Pat in California.

About the Author
James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.” Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Are we living in a post-temporal age? Has history come to an end? This book argues against the widespread perception of postmodern narrativity as atemporal and ahistorical, claiming that postmodernity is characterized by an explosion of heterogeneous narrative "timeshapes" or chronotopes.

While science, religion, and politics have generated new narrative forms of apprehending temporality, literary incarnations can be found in the worlds of science fiction.

By engaging classic science-fictional conventions, such as time travel, alternative history, and the end of the world, and by situating these conventions in their cultural context, this book offers a new and fresh perspective on the narratology and cultural significance of time.

About the Author
Elana Gomel is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English and American Studies, Tel-Aviv University, Israel, which she chaired for two years. She is the author of three academic books and a number of articles, on topics ranging from science fiction to narrative theory; and from poetics of evolution to the Victorian novel.
