Searching for Father

One of the most outstanding testimonies to the grace of God and the transformative power of the Christian gospel I have ever read! I know Mike and Michele Casey personally but didn't know the whole back story that led to their thriving ministry that continues to save lives today by the power of God. The true and uncensored story kept me gripped to my reading chair as it was hard to put down! I enjoyed the low-key and "straight from the heart" style. Mike is able to share the events of his life as well as his inner thoughts and feelings in a way that he "keeps it real" (and raw!). Knowing Mike now as a minister and pastor makes it hard to imagine he went through such family dysfunction and trauma. This story should be made into a movie! A must read for those seeking the Father-heart of God who may not have experienced a "normal" relationship with their earthly father. It shows how God has made Mike Casey the spiritual father he is today to many, despite his horrific family background and apparently hopeless chemical addiction.

Protect Every Little Kid after Reading this Book!

Well-written and scary, this biography will shake anyone's idea of what a good childhood is! I didn't mean to read it, but it draws you in, and I couldn't put it down. Mike has an amazing ability to recall facts and pour out remembrances. I want to protect every little kid after reading this traumatic story. I don't understand the title. The strain on the author is stressful, but his life-changes are so frequent, he can never become comfortably numb. I am still reading but I wanted to say WOW. This is a great book.

They offer a wealth of information about the costumes and customs of the day. Loretta Hines Howard gave her collection of creche figures, including the magnificent group called the Adoration of Angels, to the Metropolitan Museum in 1965. For many years she installed it personally, and now her work is being carried on by her daughter, Linn Howard. Together with Mary Jane Pool, noted author and long-time editor-in-chief of House and Garden magazine, Linn Howard tells about the Neapolitan tradition of creche making, and about the Metropolitan's collection in particular. The authors also provide a fascinating glimpse into the care and conservation of the figures; thumbnail biographies of the artists to whom particular figures can be attributed; a glossary; and the story of how Loretta Hines Howard began her collecting. This is a stunningly beautiful book

Each time I visit the Met at Christmas and see this exqusite creche, I am in awe at the magnitude and splendor of detail. The book was fascinating. I appreciated the in-depth history of Neapolitan artists who meticulosly hand carved the individual figures with such fastidious, detailed execution..

Truly a STUNNING Book!

Whether you have been to see the annual installation of the Angel Tree at the Met in Manhattan or not, you haven't really seen it until you see these priceless antique figurines "up close" -- possible only through close-up photography for most of us. You just can't get close enough "in person" to see and appreciate the incredible detail of each piece in the collection.

The photography in this book is as amazing as are the figures themselves.

For those who don't know, the tree is "lit" by [electric] candles, with the angels primarily on its branches. They are truly lovely, as are the cherubs interspersed among them - but the nativity UNDER the tree will blow you away.

In addition to the manger scene frequently displayed (the crèche), the scene under THIS huge tree includes an entire village and surrounding countryside as it might have been the night that Christ was born in that manger scene -- which is frequently all there IS to most nativities.

The detail of this miniature world rivals anything you've ever seen anywhere, I'm quite sure -- all the more amazing when you remember that these are [primarily] antique figures and that this is the collection of one single woman, found all over the world as she traveled throughout her life, then DONATED to the Met for all to enjoy forever.

The animals included go far beyond the "usual" few donkeys, cows, sheep (and the camels of the Wise Men) to horses, an elephant, a monkey, dogs, pigs, turkeys, goats of several breeds and more - baby animals, old animals, working animals, each one unique. Structures include grass huts, brick shops, steps carved into hillsides, paths and vegetation of various types, wells - and still more.

The scene is peopled with tradesmen of many types - painters, smithies, troubadours, merchants - and the female characters are equally varied. The wealthy each have man (or maid) servants, as they would have, the children are different ages and classes. The costuming and facial expressions go far beyond what you usually see - or expect to see.

Even live, unless you are one of the curators, on the installation crew, or related to Loretta Hinds Howard (who collected this amazing scene - personally installing & supervising same for many years), you will NEVER see these figures in the detail available in this book - and they are incredible!

That alone is reason enough to buy the book, but the text provides two more: it details the history of the collection, how it is curated and displayed each year, AND includes the Bible texts that support the scenes.

In addition to a wonderful gift for anyone who has seen it live and didn't buy the book at the time (especially ex-New Yorkers), this would be a PERFECT Christmas gift for your very religious aunt, your agnostic uncle who has always been a history buff, your cousin who is into antiques (or collecting - or dolls), anyone fascinated by philanthropy and/or museum acquisition -- and that friend everyone seems to have who is crazy for Christmas decorations, to name just a few.

If you buy a copy as a gift, make SURE you get one for yourself as well if you expect yourself to let it go once you've seen it. My copy will remain in my library all year, and will move under my own Angel Tree every holiday for the rest of my days. BY THE WAY, included with the book is a separate tri-fold, wide-angle shot of a large portion of the scene at the base of the tree, with a few of the angels on the lower branches flying above. I will display mine under my tree (it can be persuaded to stand with minimal support). Additional photos are on the "flip" side.

As I said in the title of this review - TRULY a stunning book - documenting a unique and STUNNING collection that is only installed at Christmas time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Having actually seen the Angel Tree at the MMA, in New York City, I have to say this is an exceptional visual recording of it. To me, the quotes from the New Testament, using the King James version translation, make it even more meaningful. Dr. Peter Pikkert has spent much of his life in the Middle East working as a teacher, translator and writer. He has studied at the universities of Jordan, Istanbul, Syracuse and South Africa and has also written "A Basic Course in Modern Turkish", "The Visitor", "Desecrated Lands", "The Fall of Christendom and the Rise of the Church", and "Protestant Missionaries to the Middle East: Ambassadors of Christ or Culture?"

Good book. Not really a new edition.

This is a lot more of a grammar than a teach yourself Kurmanji for dummies. Be aware of that. Grammars are not for everybody, but I actually quite enjoy the style of this book. The Rizgar Learn Kurdish book is nice and progresses well, but I like that this grammar is so concise and gets right to the point about everything.

I previously got the 1991 version of this book from the library, so when I noticed that the edition for sale here is 2010 I was excited. To my disappointment though, NOTHING HAS CHANGE SINCE THE 1991 VERSION. In the intro to the 1991 version of the book, the editor say that it was a preliminary editions and that there were plans to add exercises and improve the course. This part was just taken out of the intro in the new edition and nothing else was just, with the exception of the font being slightly larger. 22 years later and the book is exactly the same.

There are some typos, but for the most part the book is worth a read. It's helping me out.

Story based on a misnomer

The Little Drummer Girl has one glaring deficiency: the basis upon which the story rests is false.

The novel's antagonist, named Khalil, is a 'Palestinian' freedom fighter who doesn't want the 'Palestinian People' to wait 2,000 years, like the Jews waited, for the restoration of their 'homeland'. Khalil runs a highly effective terrorist network that bombs Israeli targets throughout Europe in order to advertise the 'Palestinian' cause.

John le Carré bases his story on the false historical claim that there is such an ethnic group called the 'Palestinians'. The only 'Palestinians' to have existed were citizens of the 1922 League of Nations' 'Mandate for Palestine', the Jewish Homeland. The term 'Palestinian' was only used for legal purposes to describe those living in the Jewish Homeland between 1922-1948. As such, Jews were also defined as 'Palestinians'. When Israel became a state in 1948 (changing its name from Palestine to Israel. The name Palestine was given to the territory in 135 AD by Emperor Hadrian as an insult to the Jews, who had just revolted against Roman rule for a second time. Palestine is the Romanized version of the name Philistine, the land of Israel's ancient enemies), the term 'Palestinian' became defunct, but was then co-opted by Arab governments and used to fool ignorant observers that the 'Palestinians' had lost their land to the Jews. John le Carré presents the 'Palestinians' as an actual ethnic group with justified land claims against the Jewish state, when in fact there never was a 'Palestinian' ethnic group present in the Middle East. And here's the proof of the Arab governments' lie: Unless those who take the anti-Israeli side in this discussion can produce what should be the easy to find documents from the early 1920s where the 'Palestinian People' are demanding their state and being denied their demands by the League of Nations, then you have just proved to yourselves that the 'distinct Palestinian People' canard is just that-a canard.

The Little Drummer Girl does have one saving grace, however, and that revolves around the Mossad recruitment of 'Charlie', an unknown actress with Vanessa Redgrave-like politics. Due to the latest bombing by Khalil of an Israeli target in Bad Godesberg, the Mossad must quickly neutralize Khalil and his network or else the politicians in Israel and the IDF will take matters into their own hands, which means indiscriminate reprisal attacks on Arab (not 'Palestinian') refugee camps, resulting in the deaths of women and children and another black eye for Israel in the court of world opinion.

On the trail of the elusive Khalil is the Mossad's best operative-Kurtz, and his Mossad team. Kurtz's plan: use Charlie to infiltrate Khalil's network and hope to luck that once inside Khalil can be found.

The MIssing Little Drummer Girl

I read the book before I saw the movie, which usually makes the movie seem less interesting, but that was not the case. Seeing Diane Keaton at the training camp was more vivid than I could imagine when reading. This is an important book, neither for nor against the Palestinians or the Israelis. It is just telling a part of the story. This young woman is indicative of the lengths that each will go to try to stop the other. I believe convincing a Palestinian supporter to help the Israelis is one of the most important parts of the book. The Israeli spy shows her a bit of truth, and informs the reader of the continued use of terror. The Israelis are trying to stop him, not kill hundreds of Palestinians. That is the message but the delivery is worth more than the message.
I don't understand why this movie is so hard to find. NetFlix and BlockBuster did not list it when I searched which is why I finally bought it, and even that took some doing.

About the Author
Howard Stevenson is the Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, Senior Associate Dean, Director of Publication Activities, and the Vice Provost for Harvard University Planning and Resources. A member and former chair of the Entrepreneurial Management Unit, he has served as the School s Senior Associate Dean and Director of External Relations, chair of the Latin American Faculty Advisory Group, Senior Associate Dean and Director of Financial and Information Systems, and faculty chair of Executive Education s Owner/President Manager (OPM) Program. Professor Stevenson s research focuses on the life patterns that create enduring success, entrepreneurship and predictability. He has authored or coauthored more than 150 case studies, numerous articles, and nine books including Just Enough: Tools for Creating Success in Your Work and Life (with L. Nash) and, Make Your Own Luck: 12 Practical Steps to Taking Smarter Risks in Business (with E. Shapiro). He has created several successful companies. Currently he is a director of Camp Dresser & McKee and Landmark Communications. He is a director of National Public Radio, a Trustee of the Massachusetts chapter of The Nature Conservancy, Mt. Auburn Hospital, and Trustee Emeritus of The Boston Ballet. He served as Director and President of The Sudbury Valley Trustees.

Howard Stevenson has written the best book that I have ever read about fund raising. The novice as well as the seasoned veteran will find a wealth of excellent advice on how to, and how not to, approach this vital endeavor. Directors of Development should give a copy to every volunteer.

Fund raising par excellence

This marvelous book is the best handbook on fund raising ever written. It's totally serious but it's also very funny, using many wonderful examples. For any person involved with non-profits, this book should be on their must list. I was especially impressed by Chapter 6, on what makes a successful fund raising leader. The tips on what to remember--from "it's not about you", to "it should be fun"--should be memorized by every board chair, every board campaign chair, every board participant in a campaign. If they do so, then any of their campaigns will be a major success.
