About the Author

Emanuele Feronato

Emanuele Feronato has been studying programming languages since the early 1980s, with a particular interest in game development. He has taught online programming for European Social Fund (ESF), and then founded a web development company in Italy. As a game developer, Emanuele developed Flash games sponsored by the biggest game portals and his games have been played more than 90 million times. He now ports most of them on mobile platforms and develops HTML5 games, which have been featured in the most important mobile web markets, such as Amazon. As a writer, he has worked as a technical reviewer for Packt Publishing and published the books Flash Game Development by Example and Box2D for Flash Games. His blog, www.emanueleferonato.com, is one of the most visited blogs about indie game development.

Awesome learning book

As a Learning Cocos2d-JS book, this is a spectacular book, the author give a lot of examples about engine features, you can start to make your games
using physics(Box2D and Chipmunk), endless runner, particle, virtual pads, swipe gestures, grid levels, etc.

The JS port of the Cocos2d-X engine is good, and the author is a great writer (his blog is really awesome), but, some people talks about this cross platform powers of Cocos2d-JS, that is possible to use on web and on devices, I thought that the author could give more information about, I have few questions about native development and more about to publish on web... and I'm not a complete beginner on Cocos2d-x C++ version, but the Cocos2d-x community is so active that all my questions about Android side was solved, but for web I am just starting, all examples run in every platform, you just need to know how to do it, isn't just HTML5, after you know how to use this engine for each platform in command line, isn't so complicated and it is on README file on root folder, you will see how powerful this book is and after that you will simply love it, as the title says "Learning Cocos2d-JS", this book is a powerful tool to you learn to make games, Cocos2d-JS is really fast for test, for my games the stability and performance was almost like native.

Relatively brief, but good, survey of Cocos2d-JS v3

This relatively brief book is probably best thought of as a quick review of what Cocos2d-JS has to offer. The core OSS project has been active and that is great to see as "native" Web based games continue to mature. While advanced knowledge of HTML5 & JavaScript isn’t necessary, some generic JavaScript coding experience makes reading the book a bit more easy to understand.

I found the overall presentation to be relatively straight-forward and clear, and the code examples not too complicated, but not entirely trivial either. If you read the book as a relatively short survey, you’ll be pretty satisfied and ready to find more depth elsewhere. If you are looking for a detailed walk through Cocos2d architecture, framework features, and coding patterns, you will be left wanting more (which was my case).

I'd give the book 5 starts if it went a bit more into Cocos2d-JS framework details and more conceptual bits on structuring programs for a web publishing target...especially as projects get larger, etc.

Great book for starting out in Cocos2d-js

This was a fantastic book. There are a couple errors on the Kindle edition(the version I bought) but the code examples are all there. The different chapters each provide very useful information. I look forward to other books from this author.

A little more on the book itself. This is great if you are completely new to Cocos2d-js(as I was). After reading the book I feel it gave me a solid base as to where to dive deeper on certain topics for a game I am working on. If you are new to Cocos2d-js it is well worth the money.
